Eliminating Buzz from Computer Monitor?

Problem: My computer monitor causes my guitar to buzz. I know it's the monitor, because the buzz goes completely away when I take a few steps back away from it.

Question: Is this a common problem, and what's the best way to solve it?

It is a common problem and can be solved by taking a few steps back.

Sometimes you can minimize the hum by turning your guitar so that the pickups are perpendicular to the monitor, ie the head of the guitar is pointing away from the screen.

I did try the perpendicular thing, and it helped some, but the buzz remained constant. I guess my best bet is to either move the monitor off in the distance, or set up my keyboard several feet away from the monitor. I never knew this would be a problem.

Are the new LCD flat-screen monitors prone to doing the same thing, or are they great at eliminating any buzz?

They have much less RFI and are much less prone to causing hum.

This occurs with a CRT (cathode ray tube) monitor. No, you will not have the interference with an LCD. This problem is most pronounced when using humbucker pickups. To make due until you get another monitor, just flip the monitor off before recording a track. This is cumbersome, but a little easier if you learn or map some hotkeys for your software (e.g. record, stop).

Hey, do doubt, that's a good idea. I know all the basic Hot Keys for recording and playback, so I could easily record with the monitor off. This will of course be a temporary solution. I plan on getting something like a 17" ViewSonic LCD in the long run. They're starting to have really reasonable prices on them on-line. I'll get a black one to match everything else in the studio.
