Electrovoice mics ...

Like the movie "Candyman", since my name is said more than three times in this thread, I appear!

Here are some thoughts on each microphone;

EV 635a-THEE mic for me on "Stones style" R&B vocals,
and first grab on uptempo soul stuff.
On melodic material, I prefer it for female voice and male
tenor. (no vocal bass response to speak or sing of)

Per Bob Ohlsson, great R&B vocal mic, terrific on percussion also.
Used on Willie Dixon's bass recordings at Chess!

EV RE15 (or RE16)-Love this one for getting that "RCA Studios"
kind of vocal sound ala Rick Nelson.
Elvis used either one of these two for most all his (RCA) hits.
They kept Dolly's RE15 in a special safe at RCA for her,
again used for most all her hits too.

The "el cheapo mod" is to take the foam out of a RE16, then use
a pop screen to protect the capsule for vocals=clearer high end.

EV 666-Legendary mic for drums. As far as vocals, the closest thing to a RCA 77D (cardiod) you're going to get for under $200-
if you're lucky. Otherwise get a Beyer DX modded by Stephen Sank (he puts a 77 ribbon in it).
The 666 was used on a number of Aretha's hits at Atlantic in her heyday, when she was singing/playing piano at the same time.

EV RE20-Not a whole lot of time spent on the fraternal twin to the
EV 666, however, it's a bit cleaner/thinner than the 666.
Not better or worse IMHO just different.

Hope this helps,

Chris

P.S. For the pro studio, I don't think the EV 666 is practical,
as there is NO repair/part service from EV available.
Meant in the context of "matching" later vocal tracks.
GREAT collectible-if it works properly. My score is 50%
out of two bought.

Cjacek, when you get your RE15 or RE16, make sure it has the clip to it. It's interchangable with the EV 635a and vice versa.

Thanks Chris! Ya know, I've always wondered which dynamic mic Elvis used for his 70's studio cuts as it's really no secret that he preferred that over a condenser, in the 70's that is. Of course, Elvis used to hold it in hand and not on a stand. Used to drive the technicians nuts as they had to think up ways to get around this rather unorthodox way of recording. ;) Some even suggested putting foam around the shaft of the mic so that less "handling noise" was present. I must say the studio masters and even the untouched outtakes sounded damn good and "warm". Ok, so now I know it's the RE15 Elvis used. When was the RE16 introduced ? As for the mic clip .. yeah, I'll definitely try to get one with it. I've had probs getting one for my 635a but then I stumbled onto a rather pricey version by SHURE. It's a mic clip for their thin mics. It actually fit the 635a perfectly.

Thanks :)

Daniel

Sure thing cjacek.

Actually both the RE15 and RE16 were used in the 60's by Elvis.

Both are in use, for example, on the 1968 "Elvis"
TV Special aka "The Comeback Special".

When Elvis first went to RCA, supposedly there was an AE who like the 635a on his voice,
and it was used on some early hits.

My guess is that "I Want You, I Need You" is one of the million+ selling songs using the 635a.

Not sure on the original production date of the RE15 and RE16 though.
Harvey may know.

Chris

P.S. The Shure 546 has been impressing me
lately too BTW.

Hold on a sec there Chris .. You mean to tell me that the 635a is in production since the 50's / 60's ? Whoa!

a few more q's ...

What is the functional difference between the RE-15 and RE-16 ? I remember reading that the 16 had a pop filter .. Doesn't the 15 have one as well ? Also, which of the EV dynamics have Variable-D® or lack of proximity effect ?

Thanks,

Daniel :)

the 637 and the PL5 are basically the same mic..and look identical too.

The EV 635a was available by at least the mid 50's IIRC.
Before Elvis switched labels from Sun to RCA in any event.

They were the cheapest mic's RCA had amongst Tellys, 77 & 44 ribbons, and the like. Bill Porter, one of the main AE's there for Elvis, favored the EV 635a quite a bit.
Like the Unidyne III's (SM57, 545 series), they're sensitive to
"loading" issues with a mic pre for best results.

An EV 635a dropped head first loses top end response,
so many people diss them without knowing how great they can sound, if they've used a "bad" one.

AFAIK the RE15 has some foam in the internal windscreen,
much less than the RE16. Perhaps one of the RE15 owners
here will enlighten us.

Other than the EV 635a, which is an omni, other EV's which have Variable D include the PL20 (same as RE20), and EV 667.

The previously mentioned RE15, RE16, RE18, 666 are all Variable
D's too. The first two and (probably) the third have the same
capsule.

The 667 has a manual EQ settings compared to the 666 whose EQ circuit is preset internally. They help give both mics a unique sound BTW.
One of my 666's has a failed internal EQ circuit, but it still sounds
pretty cool! (no real low end/less top end now)

Ran across some pictures of Buddy Bolly performing with the EV 666 shortly before the plane crash...

Chris

P.S. Sometimes a "RE15" level capsule slipped through as a PL10.
Try all four out to find the best one(s).
It would be the one with more top end response.

Very informative reply. Thanks very much Chris!

While we're heaping glorious praise on the various EVs, don't forget (that is if you've ever seen one) the RE38...
This is an interesting mic, with an onboard EQ selector (that I rarely use), and comes with a little EV screwdriver to make the settings with....
It's my mic of choice on a kick drum, but is also useful for lots of other things, including some vocals...
I have used the EQ switch on the mic when recording a Vox AC30 cabinet, and loved the result....

Bruce
PS...
I'm looking for another RE38 if anyone has one for sale out there.....

<< (that is if you've ever seen one) the RE38... >>

i have one! weird looking thing......kinda like a cross between an RE20 and one of the 868 kick mics. scored it for $180 (shipped) in practically brand new shape, complete with case, stand mount (same one as the RE20) and little EV-badged screwdriver. one of the single best purchases i've made (and prolly one of the best "scores" too).

<< It's my mic of choice on a kick drum >>

i love the way it sounds on my Pearl Export kick. put the diaphragm about even with the hole in the front head and pointing straight at the beater. nice.

<< but is also useful for lots of other things, including some vocals >>

honestly, it's the only mic i've ever heard my voice through that i didn't immediately hate. in fact, i love it on my voice. of course, i'm about the only person whose vocals i've preferred it on. weird, but i'm VERY happy about that fact. i run mine through an older symetrix 528 (not the "E"), and it's a very nice combo.

i've also used it on acoustic guitar (interesting tone) and on amp cabs as well, and it's done a fantastic job on those--amps were a fender blues junior and a solidstate ultimate chorus. liked it on the junior better, but then again, i like its sound better to begin with.

can't say i've played much with the freq switch on the back--seems to put out a fine enough sound with it set to a "flat" eq. yet another dynamic that benefits from loading. switching from 200ohms to 50ohms on my VTB1 brought out a pronounced change in the sound--talk about fatting it up! much deeper and fuller......not like it needed it......but man....enough to leave it on 50!

and sorry bruce, it's not for sale. :D it's use on my voice being reason enough to keep it. any idea what it would "compare" to? i've heard it being described as "similar to an RE20". how valid would you consider that?

cheers,
wade

Hi Wade...
Cool to run into someone else who likes this mic...
I don't think there are that many RE38s out there....

I think they are pretty unique tonally...
They seem to work on things I have a problem getting a good sound on (the aforementioned kick and AC30), so they are sorta my wild card mic...

Plus they look so damn cool!
