I'm back to working on my Royer mod project, and I think I've rounded up the last of the parts. Being solder-challenged, I rounded up an electronics expert/buddy who owes me a favor to do the actual electronic work. He spec'd the parts from Mouser and I ordered them, and I noticed all of the caps are electrolytics. Seems to me I read that this is a bad thing for the head amplifier part of this project. Am I right? Am I nuts? The Tapeop article doesn't say one way or the other.

They should NOT be electros in the mic! No way!

You need at least mylars! Polypropylene are preffered.

Electros are what you need in the power supply, though.

Electros

I haven't checked that schemo out in a few months, but aren't there electros in the mic body for PSU filtering?

I wouldn't want an electro in my signal path, but hey.

Thanks, PhilGood. I thought I'd read that, so now I'm back to Mouser for another load of parts!

Sometimes you have to put Electro"s in the Signal Path to block DC from getting into the AC audio signal....It is best to use Low leakage Types and bypass them with a Poly or metalized Poly Cap as Electro"s can cause an unpleasant distortion at Higher frequencies and the Poly Bypass cap help eliminate this.....

Most preamps will have DC blocking Caps in the signal Path even the really high end ones cuz is some situations it is allmost impossible to not use them without some tricky circuitry which means more circuitry for the signal to go through which causes it"s own set of problems which makes useing the Electro"s in most cases the best solution....

Cheers
