Hi again :) I'm trying to do a cover of "Electric Gypsy" by Andy Timmons.

Can u guys lemme know what u think of the sounds? Particularly the reverb and the bass geetar. I'm trying to get a "big reverby" sound but I dont want to swamp the whole song. There's not a whole lot going on which helps, but I dunno what's considered too much If ya see what I mean. I think I may need to define the bass more, I dunno.

Cheers all,

Ian.........

Hey man...welcome back.

Well, I know what you're going for, so that tempers my post. I'm not crazy about the sound your getting on the git at first...it's almost like it's over-distorting after the distortion, if that makes sense...like there's normal distortion, which is cool, but then somehow digital "BLAAAAAAA" got thrown in..like @ :25-28, but on a loop, I'm kinda' getting used to it.

Verb on drums = huge. Gives it almost a Hendrix Vibe. Good or bad, your call.

Here's the sum of my post. I fucking love the way you play guitar. You could play it through a pignose amp and run it direct, and I'd eventually get used to it. I'm sorry I can't be more helpful.

I like the snare sound a lot.

Actually, I like all of it, and if the overdistortion is intentional, roll with it.

Thanks Chris. Man u've got some perceptive ears. That geetar sound is from my pod on the "layer" model which is a cleanish amp + a distorted one layered over the top. I know what u mean about the digital badness of it. Some of that is my LP, the jack, the switch and the pots are buggered :p some is also cos it has a lot of fret buzz. I like that rough sound tho, It's kinda similar to the original sound so I'm happy.

u don't think the reverb is too much then? or the bass is undefined?

Cheers...........

I think the reverb is totally up to you. I wanna' listen to the original after hearing this, b/c I've looped yours about 40 times (not an exaggeration).

As far as the low end, I think it's over the top...so you're definitely gonna' get some mud on a lot of systems. I'll tell you, it sounds really excellent on the monitors right now, but I'm used to these enough to know that there's too much low end. Low lows...below 80.

I'll be back after I hear the original...if I can find it...LOL.

A Long, Slow Download Later

Hey man, that is one seriously cool jam (downloaded the Timmons version). I realized I've heard him before ("I Remember Stevie"). That take off on "Mary Had a Little Lamb" is just mind-blowing.

Dude, I think the verb is very nice. You're gonna' have to roll a lot of the low lows off your final mix, but I really would like to hear you finish this.

I'm done until you update it...BUT DO IT!!

You're fast becoming a kind of guitar hero to me :D..but man, I suck. :D :D

Thanks again Chris. I expect u are right about the bass. I'll stick a high pass on it (there's nothing on it at the mo) then I guess i'll be able to hear if it needs more definition by whether it still cuts or not.

I'm happy with the drums. Just for interest they are programmed with "drumkit from hell". I'm gonna bring the ride down a bit tho

Guitar hero!! :o LOL Mr Timmons made it up, I just copied it :D .........sloppily :p

Short but sweet.
Are you going to post a remix of "The Residents"? That was one of the best things I've heard here.

Everything's copied, man. Mr. Timmons "copied" a bit of little wing in here too ;)

If the following sounds insultingly simple, I apologize, but I like this piece a lot. In addition to the filter, do this if you haven't:

burn a copy of this onto CD, and play it on your home stereo and maybe in your car, if you have one. Normal systems (car, home audio) boost the crap out of the lows and the highs, right? I did this with your tune, and the lows had nowhere to go other than into the shitty world of distortion. I'm getting sounds that reflect weird subharmonic distortion...like none of the lows were rolled off of the guitar and/or bass, so those frequencies are just piling up. Unfortunately, my monitors don't really respond below 50Hz, so I have to do this with all of my mixes.

The other thing, since this is a cover, is to just do a visual A/B of the Timmons version and yours on a regular stereo EQ graph. I haven't done this yet with your tune, but I'd be willing to bet that on the commercial cut, you're gonna' see a sharp dropoff below about 63Hz, and on yours...no such dropoff. If anything, I think yours might actually get louder the lower you go.

Mixing the lows correctly is BY FAR the most difficult part for me. If you were using all synth instruments, it's not that hard, but you're recording stuff that you cannot necessarily hear (guitar lows and bass low lows). To mix it properly, I have to turn it up REALLY REALLY loud to make sure that the lows that you can't hear aren't going to break windows when played in your car.

Again, I don't want this to sound condescending at all...it's just that these are things I've learned in the last month or so, and they helped me a lot, so maybe you can get some use out of it.

Cheers Chris, not condesending at all. I'm no expert :p I do find the lows the hardest part to mix aswell. I'm hoping to get some decent monitors soon with better low end response (mackie 828s) I have rolled off some bass now and its uploaded, same link. I played it on my mates comp who has a sub. It got rid of some of the woofyness but it sounds crappy to me....I hate low frequencies :(

Anyway thanks for the info.

fprod: we will be doing the bass and geetar tracks next week some time and the vox probably the week after so I'll post something then :)

btw Chris, If yer interested I've tabbed out that tune to go on a friend of mines site along with the backing. He's making a collection of riffs n licks that peeps can learn and jam over. So If u want it just shout and I'll send ya the links :)

Nice job. Sounds really good. Now, if you still hate the way it sounds, just remember that you're always allowed to listen to it with the "smiley face" EQ...hehehe...

I boosted the lows and highs on my system, and the low end seems to be under control now.

BTW - thanks for the tab offer, but the truth is, I never use the stuff. It's just easier for me to listen and figure it out, which I did on this one last night. :D Good stuff...now go finish it.

LOL same here, Sorry didn't mean to sound like an arse :) It took me longer to work out if my tab was correct than it did to learn the tune :p

I love it man.Dreamy sounding reverb happening there that sets a mood......drums come in and it sounds like a Hendrix tune but I guess thats what he was shooting for with a title like "Electric Gypsy".;).....sounds good to me man.

Really nice Guitar Work,here!!!...huh?that's it...?ok...tad less verb on everything.Tease...

yeah i listened to his a few days ago....it is WAAAAAAAY too short..whats up with that..??...how bout when you record something this cool you record enough to satisfy the listener....uh huh!.....very s-r-v-PJ--ish.....which is a VERY good thing...

to recap:..
lets add a little more then when your done ....maybe a reprise of the first part.....then add an ending.....then repost...

lol

Thanks guys, I am doing the whole song (If I can play it all without sounding like an idiot :p ) It's about 4 mins long..... ish. I'm about half way through now. I'll repost once I'm done but that may be some time cos it's hard (for me anyhoo)

Cheers...........
