electric guitat hum

is it normal for guitar and bass to start to hum if your not touching the strings -is there anything i can do to limit this

This is perfectly normal. The pickups are grounded to the bridge, and when you touch any metal part of the guitar, you are the ground.

There are two ways to eliminate this. You can get a noise gate, or you can use active pickups. Most people just keep a hand on the strings.

If you have a properly ground outlet you will not have that problem at all. There is a certain amount of hum in most amps to start with, but it will not increase when your hand comes off.
