Hello all!

I hope this finds someone well!

First off, I'm a pure newb. Like... totatlly newbalishis!!

I've been trying to find good answers but the board is REAL slow with key word searches.

I'm trying to figure out if it is possible to hook up my electric guitar through the Line Out of my Fender Performer 1000 amplifier into my onBoard sound card (AC'97 sound chip).

I'm afraid to try because I'm reading vague explanations on the net that putting a 1/4 inch jack into a 1/8 inch jack with an adaptor could fry my PC. I don't know enough about my line out on the Fender amp to understand the risk. Let's face it, I don't know enough about any of this.

Will I get good sound quality in recording direct? Is the only way the "Mic" way?

I know I should probably invest in a proper sound card, but a homerecording.com article says to give the ol' sound card a try.

BTW, the echo reporting utility is not downloadable on homerecording.com.

Any feedback would be great!

That should work fine if it's a true line out. Most sound cards have a line in for this this kind of signal.

I would start with low volume and work up slowly to see what you have to work with.

I do something equivalent when I want to get a quick PC copy of a cassette. I run headphone out to sound line in. Works great.

Line Out is fine for a Line In. No, it won't fry your PC. WHat would fry your PC -- well, the sound card anyway -- would be plugging the speaker output into the Line In.

Personally I've never liked the sound of guitar amps direct. A decent amp modeler is ideal if you don't want to (or can't) mic a nicely cranked amp...

Line level is Line Level whether it is an RCA plug, a 1/4" plug or a 1/8" plug.
