elctronic drums and midi plugins

I bought a set of Roland hd-1 vdrums to have some fun with. I've now outgrown the preset kits, and as they aren't customizable I'm thinking about a midi plugin to use with Cakewalk Sonar. As I am a guitarist, my knowledge of midi is fairly limited. I really just want to access some better drum sounds, but don't want anything as sophisticated or expensive as BFD2 for example. Any suggestions?
 
There all kind of pricey unless you got something like EZ drummer and you'd end up outgrowing that pretty quickly to as the samples seem to be pre processed...

I use Superior Drummer 2 which is excellent but is expensive and has limited kits without paying for the additional samples..


so Id probably suggest XLNs Addictive drums....its around $100 cheaper than BFD2 and has the advantage of offering a range of kits in the initial package...either that or Cakewalks own session drummer 3 has some pretty decent samples but you'll need to upgrade to Sonar Producer 8.5, may be your cheapest route?
 
Ta for that - looks like there is a free download version to try. I found the following in their FAQ section:

How can I make your MIDI files play back on my other MIDI instruments *and* how can I interface my hardware controller (pads, etc.) to the DrumCore or KitCore MIDI instrument?
A: Put the instrument or controller into "General MIDI" (sometimes called "GM") mode. The way our MIDI files play on other softsynths and the way we can be interfaced to hardware controllers is that we are General MIDI compatible. This breaks-down with some of the tweakier kits (lotsa of misc percussion sounds like Latin, electronic kits, Terry Bozzio's "Big" kit), but we do try and keep the bread-an-butter sounds (kick, snare, hi-hats, etc.) on the same note assignments.

Sounds like I should be able to play my kit through it ?
 
yup I think it does...and btw the Kitcore sample are like $49....well worth a punt??


try the free drumcore first obviously before parting with any cash....
