Hey folks. My current set - up.
Digi002R
ART PRO (2)
ART MPA Gold

I need an 8 channel pre with lightpipe for the drums. The ARTs are handling all my Vox/Guit needs with the condensers. Sooo...

Behri ADA8000 (Yeah I know) - Lightpipe standard
SM Audio PR8 MKII - Lightpipe optional
M Audio Octane - Lightpipe standard
Focusrite Octopre - Lightpipe optional

So keeping in mind this will be for drums only, I'm wondering where else to turn. In the above choices, the Octopre is almost out of my budget but I could stretch it. The Octane seems to have gotten some good reviews and I heard from owners about some good and bad points. The $599 is a chunk but I don't need to purchase the optional adat. SM PR8 MKII I know nothing about and haven't really found any reviews except that the ADAT output seems quiet. The price is right however. One of the only "decent" Behri products out there seems to be the ADA8000 and for that price, I could buy a backup if the first one shits the bed. I have to keep this around $600 and I know you can't get too much for $75 a channel. Any other options or opinions on the above would be greatly appreciated.

i have the ada8000. i have no complaints, it does the job. its not like i could hear the difference anyway though. only thing, make sure you have both the in's and out's plugged in because if you only use one wire, it makes all these pops and crackles.

theres also the digimax lt which you can get on ebay used for 500 ish, i think new it's 799.

and the digimax 96k, for 1399 ish :)

I have the ADA8000 as well and am more than pleased... Does what i need it to do and haven't had any issues at all...

After I upgrade my monitors, I'll be shopping for an Octane, but until then, this is working just fine.

:)

I never had that problem. I always use just one cable.

Don't quite follow you there. My ins from my mics of course but I'd lightpipe to my 002.

Oh, I just found Octane for $499! Nice little surprise :D

I think TragikRemix is talking about the in and the out for lightpipe.

Gotcha. Loop the lightpipe between 002 and ADA8000?

That should not be necessary, and have no effect on "pops and crackles".

Where the pops and crackles most likely come from is from forgetting to set the Digidesign 002r clock source to be the slave, which will make the Behringer the master clock. You do this from inside the Pro Tools LE software. You have to do it that way, because I'm prety sure the Behringer doesn't give you the option of setting it to be the slave.

Once that is set - all those clicks and pops should disappear.

no i had it set correctly, the little switch in the back. i actually found the solution on the protoolsforum (which i dont like)... some had the problem, and some don't. thats just behringers issues i guess.

I use 3 octopre's for my mobile rig and only use the outs of the pres to the ins of the 24 track(lightpipe Im talking) never any pops. There is something else going on.

I used to own a presonus digimax lt and that thing was great for the $.

You'd need both cables hooked up if you had your master and slave clock backwards ... Audio down one lightpipe... clock up the other...

I use my Octane exclusively for tracking drums. KILLER results... tons of headroom, no problems. The built-in M-S encoder sounds great for the "overheads". $499 is a damn good price too, by the way. ;)

Ahh! That explains it. Thanks - I hadn't thought of that!

North Shore rocks!

M-Audio OCTANE won Electronic Magazine Mic pre award for 2005.
Nice reviews by MIX magazine and others too.

For 499 I'm not going to pass up a brand new Octane. Also heard about the shortages on the market but I called and these folks have plenty in stock. I'll drop a link if anyone wants. The ADA8000 was tempting but I'm thinking I'll get a little more bang for the buck with it. Thanks for all folks.

Octane rocks. That's what I use as my drum pre and I love it.

OCTANE rocks, yes, until you discover horrible design flaws in the middle of a session! it has a well known phantom power issue. it has been all over the boards. when you engage phantom power a hum appears. and a loud one. mine developed this problem even further. when I swithed on PP on channels 5-8 a loud hum appeared. BUT ON CHANNEL 1 where NOTHING was plugged in!!!
???? What the...
I would stay away from M-Audio chineese crap. really.
I'll probably buy ADA8000 to replace now missing 8 channels.
