EGG CRATE

Does anyone know where I can get cheep
acoustical treatment like egg-crate.

I have found a site that sells it for $30.00 for an 4X8
sheet?

I would like to go cheaper if possible.
 
I got mine at Markertek and that's about what I paid for it.
 
Just pleeeeeease, whatever you do, don't plaster your walls with actual egg crates. I know a band from around here, VERY good band, they're definately going to make it big. I went to watch them practice once, and as soon as I walked in the room I laughed out loud because they had completely covered the walls and ceilings with empty egg cartons. Talk about a waste of time, and not to mention they made fools of themselves. :) All I could think about was, "man, who ate all those eggs??"

Well, I believe Smelly was refering to "egg" foam. But at the very mention of "egg" an alarm always goes off in my head. Even the egg foam sucks :) but if it's all you can afford I guess it's better than nothing.
 
Well.. no it doesn't. It depends on what kind of foam you get. If you use the stuff for packing or what is sold as something to sleep on, yes it sucks bad and is worthless for defusing sound. The stuff from Markertek and Sonex and the like is a different material and does a decent job. Now if you're trying to sound proof a room, you're barking up the wrong tree all together. None of the foam products will do that.

Well that goes without saying. I think it IS good to say it every once in a while, though, so the new people to the site, and people who are just browsing through, see that foam is not for sound proofing.

I think just about everyone, when he or she starts out, looks for "sound proofing foam." Then you realize that foam is for making a room sound better, not for sound proofing. I do feel sorry, though, for all the people who line their rooms with foam, thinking that they're sound proofing. Poor fools. :)

The sonex type foam came out in the 70's. What they invented is a comprssion cutter that they can put a sheet of foam through and they get a male and female version. It's the wedges that assist the absorption. They work well as a staight absorber and don't have any of the nasty byproducts that fibreglass has.

HEY GUYS,

I just wanted to know where I can get cheep
egg-crate (foam) for a good price.

Sonex & equivalent cost as much as a new Mustang.
Which I find silly paying for a big pretty sponge.

I was hoping that one of you music rocket scientists
knew where to get something like packaging foam.

I'm not going to use it for sound proofing &
I won't use smelly old egg cartons.

If you all MUST know, I will be putting it on some of the
walls in my drum, electric amp, & my vox rooms
opposite & adjacent to reflective walls in order to deaden
the sound a bit.

I really do not need to capture that beautiful realistic reverb sound
of paneling or sheet rock!

Even though I'm sure many of you self taught deaf drum pounding
engineers love that Home Depot ambience.

I prefer to keep the drums dead & used my processor.

Thanks for the advice though.

As I said, packing foam won't do squat. Even for sound diffusion. Markertek is about the cheapest you'll find. As I remember it was $39 for two 54"x54"x3" pieces.

If all you're looking for is packaging foam, and nothing more, then I'd suggest hanging some heavy curtains, or bed comforters on your walls instead. Use what you've already got. Packaging foam is VERY openly made... that is, it's not at all dense. Heavy curtains on the walls will do a better job, and will probably look nicer. If you've got some old blankets for your bed, hang 'em up. Why go through the trouble of trying to find packaging foam that's going to suck anyway? Oh yeah, and by the way, do you know how flamable packaging foam like that is? And guess what kind of gas it turns into when it's on fire.

Just a thought

How do you think the padding used
under carpet, the rubber,foam stuff.Would that do much for absorbing sound? or is it too solid of a materail? Just a thought,What yall think,no curse
words please! my wife will make me go to church if I'm caught reading
curse words.
 
Hi Rusty - yup - you can use carpet underlay... just remember that it is only about 1/2" - 3/4" thick. Two layers would be better and two layers 4" off the wall would be better still as the frequency lowers as you move off the wall.

Hey Rusty, I thought about that at one point but then realised that it is not so much just the foam, but it is also the texture of the foam. The foam is kind of used to absorb some of the sound, but the biggest thing is the sound diffussion. If you look at the various foam panel products on the market for controlling sound, you will find that none of them have a flat surface. They all have a variety of textures.

Actually Rusty, I am at work. This is a big problem for me because I can't get any work done. This place is so addicting.

Ryan if your just wanting to record your band,maybe to see how
tight your sound is,or to pick up on any hidden mistakes,I be darn if I'd lay out that kind of money
for that only,If your wanting to do some mp3 stuff to put on the web than thats diff. But when it comes down to the end of the line
its you that knows what he wants.
 
Rusty - firstly I think I am older than you, I'm a freelance so I have lot's of spare time and I enjoy this site.
The reason you can't save the pics is because the site had to shift.
