If anyone knows this song.... The keyboard part at the start, is that a Rhodes???

How did they get such a gritty sound, i love it

It's a Wurlitzer, most likely through a slightly grungy guitar amp. There's a couple interviews on the Eel's website where E mentions the Wurly is his favorite keyboard, and on the FAQ section (I think its still there), he mentions his love on putting all his vintage keys (farfisa, synths) through guitar amps for a little grit.
