Oz, you have made many valuable contributions,
including your website, and presence on various BBS's. Please understand that my comments
were in no way intended to slight that, or your abilities. Out of respect for that and Tubedude,
will cool my jets on the "Ted Fletcher" stuff.

Actually I think you'll find that British Leyland can't build the Mini anymore because they ceased trading over a decade ago. Difficult to make things if you don't exist.

It is because they sold the rights that they can't make it

AND the fact that they were privatised and broken up in the 80s. :p

If my ears suck, then I guess I should withdraw my favorable reviews of the C1, B1 and VTB1 as they might sound crappy given that my ears liked them.

Anyhow, the same ears, which you think are shitty even though they liked your C1, B1 and VTB1, really like this TFpro Edward the Compressor. It's in a different category in terms of build quality and sound quality than your products which I've reviewed. However, it also costs a hell of a lot more so it better be on a higher level.

So, I am confused...Did I say your ears sucked? Did I say your ears are shitty? I looked back and while I tried to find those exact words you used, I was unable to locate where I said that.

If you insist on using those words, then you go right ahead. I will not stop you. What you are not is a design engineer, and as far as terms of quality of build, you are no where near qualified to make any of the comments you just made as they are based on having no knowledge of design and or how to lay out a product to build. So be sure to say that you are offering an opinion of what you know nothing about when you make these claims.

When George Schilling makes those claims in his review, you should know he is qualified, which is why he is who he is. Of course you can surprise all of us by showing us your EE degree and some products you have designed and built.

Exactly, so when the rights were sold to the Mini, only the new company had those rights to build it. Then, those rights were sold to BMW, and now they are the only people who can make it. That is just the way it goes!!!!!

However, you do not see these companies offer for viewing the legal paperwork and contracts of what they bought, other than the fact that they claim they own it. They produce what they bought and if anyone tries to copy it, they simply sue them. All documents are always brought out in discovery, which is an early phase of a lawsuit and done shortly after the suit is served.

Chris,

You are always welcome to come to our office. You are one of the few people I would be happy to show the documents to. I know you would only offer up that they are real, and would not offer their contents, as that is reserved for the courts when necessary.

Alan, it doesn't take an EE degree to judge fit and finish. It doesn't take an EE to know what a good sounding mic the B1 is. When I'm driving down the road in my 2002 Toyota Camry I know it's a good riding car. I know the fit and finish are top quality. But, I'm not an automotive engineer. Dan Kennedy makes some of the best mic preamps in the world and he's got a high school diploma.

Everyone knows that reviews are opinions. All companies have been welcome to participate in fact checking reviews. You've never taken us up on the offer. I wish you would do it the next time we put something up. The process that goes on in putting up a review and having the company fact check it helps build a relationship between the company and the reviewer.

Thanks Alan for trusting me so much.

There are a number of other people who've let me in on "secrets"
that if I were of a different character, would have made tons of money off of by blabbing or using them myself.
One even gave me keys to a warehouse worth millions, when he'd leave on vacation!

Having said that, I'm PMing BOTH of you with an idea regarding
gear review(s). This discussion reminds me of when a young
singer (guess who!), first met a world class opera singer/coach for lessons. Tell you guys the story sometime-if you ever want...

Chris

P.S. Alan like the Vampire movies, now that you've invited me,
get that SP mic at the shop READY for me to sing through!

Is Ted Fletcher and Fletcher from Mercenary one and the same?

They are different Fletchers from different time zones.

I've got a TFpro Edward the Compressor here. It is definitely a very good piece of gear. The cool parts are the width and transient release features.

Width and transient release features? It doesn't really say much about it on that website... please tell more. Thanks

I wish Alan the best of luck with his endeavors. I think this dispute between him and Ted Fletcher is much better left to private communication between the parties.

I agree, and I wish them both the best... lawsuits get old.

Hi

My earliest recollection of Ted Fletcher was back in the 70's, he ran a company called Alice Stancoil that made small broadcast consoles.

For a very brief time, there was talk of Neve taking over the company and having them build broadcast consoles for Neve while they concentrated on music consoles...

Nothing came of it...

:(

Geoff

PS. This link http://www.alice.co.uk/history.shtml is the company that bought the old "Alice" name and still build broadcast consoles. I recall their original company build small commercial radio consoles.

Damn, now we even have Geoff Tanner running around here. Too cool. Welcome!

Question for all the guys that know... what would it take to get out a good single channel optical compressor with good circuitry (in other words, properly made) for around $500?
Its getting where I cant afford all this good shit anymore, and I'm wondering why no one but meek seems to be interested in that market.

Hi

I think that you'll find that most component manufacturers, like VTL optos and THAT technology VCA's, provide application notes from which you'll find a basis to build a compressor.

Basically, all you are doing is rectifying the signal and applying a time constant in order to drive the voltage controlled element. It goes without question that this is the over-simplification of the century as I haven't mentioned law shaping or RMS detection... but you've gotta start somewhere!

A google search is a good way to get started!

How ironic. Just as I left this thread, I saw an ad for TFPro gear from a *paying* advertiser. (attached)

Ask Dan Kennedy to review his box and have a look inside!
