I've been looking at small stereo recorders for awhile now, and haven't bought one yet because they've all seemed a bit buggy. Basically, I'd like something that is palm sized, gets a good stereo image with no compression at CD quality resolution, and can upload directly into a Mac for copying/editing. This would be for recording live jazz gigs and rehearsals.

I've heard that the M-Audio microtrack, which looks great on paper, is still a little fragile and unstable and has some battery life issues. The Marantz handheld looks good, but the one I saw had not-so-great built in mics and the pres for an external mic were kinda sketchy. The new Sony (forgot the number) with the built in X/Y mics looks perfect, but it's near $2K. The Edirol R-09 looks perfect on paper, but I've yet to see one in person. Has anyone here gotten a chance to try one in person, and if so, what was it like?

Thanks!

There's more.

There' the Edirol R1, the R4 (4 tracks).

Marantz has a couple of models and and a couple of models that record straight to CD, which is kinda cool.

Then, HHB has a mic with a built in preamp and recorder. How's that for efficient!

Two high end are the Fostex FR-2, which is supposed to be great and the Sound Devices 722, which is supposed to be at least as great but very expensive.

A friend of mine has the Edirol R-1 and *loves* it. It's been out for a while, so I think it's a pretty stable product at this point as well. The R-9 looks good as well.

Bought the R-09 a while back and have been recording live gigs with it. Here's a cut of one from about a month or so ago. Here's another from a Christmas gig. This little machine is absolutely wonderful! Highest marks possible for "set and forget" recording, and for ease of uploading. The internal mics and pres are perfect for acoustic music. 10 out of 10. :)

I have an R-09 now, and I'm very happy with it as well. Easy to use, compact size, and it sounds good.
