echoplex help

i got an echoplex off of ebay in supposed working condition. it is the ep-4. when I turn it on, the tape does not roll...any idea what could be going on? it is a brand new tape. my first inclination is that it was damanged in shipping..thanks.
 
Is the capstan/pinch roller turning at all? Pinch roller in good shape? Could be a broken belt, or possibly a bad motor. I own one of these, but have never had to take it apart (yet).
 
no, it is not. when the machine is off, and the arm backs off of the tape, the roller is free to roll. when it is engaged, it will not move. would it be possible for the belt to have come loose in shipping?
 
With my echoplex, when it is off, the rubber pinch roller spins free, but the metal capstan won't turn freely if you try to move it with your fingers. When plugging in, the arm that holds the pinch roller engages with the now moving capstan. Maybe a belt could have came off in shipping, but seems remote to me.
 
I forgot to ask the obvious- is the power light coming on when plugged in? If so, then most likely its a bad drive belt or bad motor. If you can't get your money back, and your stuck with it, then check out www.marshallparts.com ( I'm sure there may be more parts places that sell belts and motors). If your not into electronics, then you might want to take it to a tech.
 
yeah, the light comes on.

the ebay ad says it was supposed to work. the seller went on vacation for 2 weeks. I have 30 days from the sale to file a complaint. I am into electronics i gues but the most complicated thing I have done is switch some strat pickups, and build some cables, and an a/b switch box. I have a reel-to reel, but I don't think I know enough to fix this thing. I guess I could open it up and just see if the belt came off somewhere...but I guess I will probably be returning this unit.
