One or two of you may recall my ongoing project to record the book of Ecclesiastes, where each song represents one of the 12 chapters. I have just completed Chapter 6.

I will soon add it to the 5 on the parent page at

http://users2.ev1.net/~thevanhoevens/music/

I haven't been by in a while, having hit kind of a musical dry spell, both writing and listening. But eventually the song came out.

All the tunes were recorded with N-Track 2.3,
SBlive soundcard with APS driver,
Win98 on a 500mhz 256meg Ram PC,
FruityLoops for drum tracks,
Electric guitar thru old Ibanez floor multiFX (analog Tubescreamer circuit)
(line out chap 1-5, chap 6 mic'd with SM58 thru Fender Twin)
Acoustic is Baby Taylor mic'd with SM58
Vocals - SM58
Keyboard solo - 20 yr. old Roland analog monophonic SH101

yep yep, Im gettin the vibe jus right here on this tune.. The only suggestions i`d make are teeny but it would tune it in just right for me( that dont matter but it turns me on anyways) ... If you added a tiny touch of batter on the kick so it pokes out just a bit more and bulges the bass, add a little above 800 on the bass so you can hear the winding on the strings, The 2100 area has a few spikes off that 2nd electric rythym mostly in the first section..The cymbals sound really good but a few crashes around 1:45 get a bit strong. A touch of low mids on the snare make it authorative and dangerous sounding. Clean and clear man.... thanks for posting. You might fatten the lower end of your vocal a tad, not enough to tell it but just enough to feel it.. yes its good..

dang...

p.s. what is an APS driver for the sb ?

Good singing. Nice smooth harmonies. I liked that little guitar riff in the chorus. Really nice and big reverb on the vocals. Good synth playing in the lead break.

I thought the song could use a little heavier low end in the verses (the chorus seemed fine). Maybe missing some low-mids too.

Hey Mark,
I really dig this tune.

I like the tone of the electric guitars....The acoustic sounds decent but I bet(I know.lol) it would sound a lot better miked with a condensor mic instead of that shure vocal mic......the "open" high hat seems a little to sizzly on the high end for my ears..it's kind of distracting.......dig the vocals and the keyboard solo worked great.....It seems like Im hearing a little bit of hiss, but it could be that open high hat...it sounds more like a shaker than a high hat the way it's eq'ed..might wanna cut some of the extreme highs on the hat......OK,thats about all I can nit pick with my untrained ears.Good tune and glad to see you back around these parts again.

These are all excellent and useful comments. Here are some scattered responses.

The APS driver is something I picked up off a link a couple of years ago at the n-Track board. It is an alternative to the SB drivers and was originally for an EMU board, I think.

I'm always gonna have certain headaches while using canned drums. Once I'm done writing the 12, I've had an offer from a Real Live Drummer to record them at an aquaintance's studio.

There is hiss and hum all over the place that I have to deal with, since I record in my bedroom with very average gear. I just gotta pick the things I'll live with.

I see that prices are coming down on condensers. It is almost time. But, how much better is a travel guitar gonna sound, anyway?

That's freeverb on the vox.

See a pattern emerging? Free. Cheap. Simple.

Excellent advice, guys. Thanks for listening to it.

Very cool, not what i expected when you said you were writing a bunch of songs about a section of the bible. I wasn't expecting the heavy distorted guits ya know what i'm sayin?

That solo sounds very cool, like the ahh's afterwards.

excellent!

I've listened to everything you posted since I joined this site over a year or so ago.. This is another great tune.. the guitar solo is tasty and the vocals are great too.. I agree with most of the previous mix suggestions although I had trouble focusing on negatives because I liked the tune so much..

Actually, the part with the synth voices could have been done better.. That was the one thing that stuck out.. The song 'Two' is still my favorite, but this is mighty close.. a 5 star tune for the vocals and guitar alone..

Nice tune

Great vox, and nice balance.

The only thing I can add to what has already been said is the acoustic sticks out a tad much for me.
I think the acoustic sound (which IS full) contains some of the mids/low end which is missing from the rest of the tune.
It just doesn't blend quite the same as the rest of the tune.

There is one crash that is around 1:10 coming out of one side that gets a little grating, maybe mix it up with another crash sound to throw the ambience around a bit.

A fine solo! Great fit in the mix and nice sound!

A Great job!

Yep, blew the dust off the old synth. Before ever picking up a guitar I was a keyboard player. Classical piano as a youth, switching to jazz in the college band, and rock keyboards in a couple of local bands.

I always looked at the guitar guys with envy, since it was such an expressive and visceral instrument. I guess I try to emulate that phrasing when I solo on keys. I eventually liquidated my keyboards and got guitar gear and taught myself.

I tried the chap 6 solo on guitar, but couldn't come up with anything til I grabbed the synth, which I was surprised still worked after being in the closet so long.

I agree about the "aahh" break in the tune. The original idea was to do all the parts with my own voice, in a thick dissonant buildup. But I just wanted to get done and move on. After finishing the 12, maybe I'll come back to do that.

I just caught jcmm's post and am editing this. I agree, jcmm.

Everybody is spot-on with their comments.

Neat stuff...try messing with the velocity more in fruityloops to get a "realer" feel to the drum tracks.Good overal musicianship and composition.Great vocal quality.Lousy cut off sounding end...what happened?

thank you. I`m going to look into that APS driver and see whats up with it. That tune is really good man. It`s got some clarity that I really like. A little hiss at the end but thats probly not hard to get out.
