Technically yes you are supposed to have a copy (xp) for every pc...

The nice thing about these processors and this mobo, is that you can buy the minimum now and upgrade later if costs are a concern. In my case I went with an XP1800, with hopes to upgrade to something like a XP2600, when the cost comes down some more, in say a year or two.

Putting a computer together is relatively simple, you just have to make sure all the parts are going to work together before you slap em in. I found in my case it was really handy to buy the everything at a store near me with a good rep, cause they *pasted* the heatsink to processor, installed that on the mobo, as well as the jumpers. Not to mention actually test all of that for me. All I had to do was stick all these components into the case and clip everything in. I think all I needed was a screwdriver to tell you the truth.

Even if they hadn't done those things for me I am sure I could have handled it. It's mostly common sense, and just double checking to make of no booboos. As well, reading the instructions before assembling is a good idea.

A thing to note, you have to get a vid card for that mobo, as there is no standard onboard video.

One thing is for sure...this new machine of mine isn't rated to be a hell of a lot higher than my old compaq pIII, but in using it, it plain blows that old POS away.

whataguy got it right.

I was just saying getting a better more productive brand of grease wasn't neccessary. But you will need to put grease on the processor, OR the heatsink that comes with the retail P4 or Athlon whichever route might have the little thermal pad. In which you simply remove the little tape over the pad and stick it on the board (after the processor ofcourse).

Either system will need thermal grease or pad. It's what takes the heat from the processor and sends it to the heatsink without the grease you just have a metal heatsink taking space and a worthless fan on top of that.. Yes, AMDs get hotter than P4s. But both produce enough heat they need a heatsink.

badassmak, also had a good idea if you have a computer store near by you could do what he did. Or see if you have any friends that have put together a computer.

I believe AMD has some videos on their site showing how to properly do the full processor/heatsink install. At least I believe that's where I got my videos before I did my first processor install.

You can take a gander over there and see what it's going to kind of be like. But if you go Intel it'll be a little different.

Can't see the computer, since the info they have of the computer you chose on their site is set in your cookies.

And we can't have your cookies, at least not that way/easy.

I'm going to say, go to the earlier suggested computer.

HP just makes me think "cutting corners, in a sloppy manner."

one more thing, whats the difference between pc2100 ddr and pc2700 ddr? thanks
