there is an earth terminal on the back of my preamp.
what it this for?,could it stop noise maybe?

Generally speaking, if they provide an earth terminal, it is intended to be used. But there is also the possibility of "ground loops".
The rule should be to have everything tied to ground at the highest upstream point and all grounds spread out serially from that point with no points where a loop current can occur. Sometimes it is hard to know without studying the schematics of your equip. groundings.

Try checking continuity between the preamp case and the next unit upstream's case and see if it is grounded without an additional connection. if it is, don't connect one. If it isn't , connect one...or just ignore it unless noise is actualy a problem.

so it can cure noise?
where in laymens term would I connect it.
in oz we have earth on our cords etc. + and - and earth 3 terminals at power point.(black ,red, green usaully)
I'm know that you just don't shove a wire in the wall.Although when I was a kid I did with my crystal radio.

Connect it to a known ground point. Test the screws holding your wall electrical receptacle in place. Otherwise, there actually are "grounding straps" that attach to your incoming cold water pipe as a ground point. It gets even messier from there, if necessary.

To simplify: first test to see if the case is *already* grounded by testing the continuity to a known ground point.

can I test this with a multi meter on say an ohms setting.
cheers
