I'm using an SP B1 to mic my combo amp. The problem is that it's too sensitive and picks up too much ambient noise.

So i figure a dynamic mic might be what I need. I am looking at getting an SM57. But I'm wondering if it will color the sound too much. I mainly just want something that will represent what I hear when I'm sitting in front of my amp...and not really alter the sound.

Thanks.

I think most ribbon mics tend to do a good job of that.

Problem is most mics that won't alter the sound too much will inevitably tend to pick up more ambient noise. Your surroundings are a bigger part of your amp's sound than you think.

You might be better off close-micing, and then simply adjusting the parameters / tone of your amp to compensate for any differences. An amp will always sound different on a recording than it does live.

Before you give-up on the SP B1 as you combo amp mic... try an inline pad... and put the big black foam windscreen on and almost close mic the amp.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll definitely look into the ribbons and try the miking recommendations.

I do have two beds in the same room. I suppose I could make some sort of mattress fort to enclose the amp. And drap some blankets over the open sides.

Or maybe I could try and make a little iso-box out of one of these plastic boxes:

And line the inside with Auralex or something like that.
My amp is a little Tech21 Trademark10, so there ought to be a box big enough to accomadate that and the B1.
