Humbucking pups are just as punk as single coils.
Sure, but a JB is a LOT hotter than a classic humbucker.
Of course, I just ordered a set of Lindy Fralin Unbuckers that I'm going to try in a guitar I'm working on right now, and if they sound the way I expect them to, they will probably be my new favorite pickups. But there again, I'm ordering them with a fairly vintage output, a 7.5K for the neck, and an 8.5K for the bridge.
JB's are up around 16.5K, and the Invader bridge is even hotter (oh, and the Invader sounds like ass, but that is a whole other thing - talk about a shit pickup from a good manufacturer). This drives your amp a lot more than I want, at least for what I consider to be a "classic" punk sound.
