Dumping to Digital for mixdown

I have a Fostex 1/2" reel to reel which I want to be able to dump to my adat. What I am wondering is can I go directly from the reel to reel into the adat? I am worried that the levels from the reel to reel might clip the adat machine. Do I need to go through the mixer first to set the levels?

whenever my friend/mentor bounces analogue to either an adat or HD24, he usually needs to pick the levels up about 4 to 7 dB..but check them. you could have a hot tape..so if in the red, use the attenuation of the console
I have seen them in the red..actually sounding good and providing non clipped audio..they give them some serious headroom

Thank you. Interesting to hear that your friend actually has to bring up the levels. I'll probably go direct at first just to see where the levels are and take it from there.
