Dull Sounding Mix

Hi! Im posting this song hoping for some MIXING critique.

Wether or not you like the song is irrelevant to me, so stuff the "I didnt like the so an so part it should haveen shorter" or the "That was the best song that I have ever heard in my life, much better than RUSH!!!" comments.

Nothing like 'Rush' at all I might add, but I liked the song..

Avoiding "irrelevant" comments I hope ...

I thought the overall mix was a wee bit quiet.

The vocals are getting just a little bit covered up. You may want to cut some frequencies of the keyboard and one of the guitars.

I'm listening on cheap headphones and the bass comes through loud and clear. On a good set of speakers the bass may be a bit too strong. The tone on it is nice however.

Contrary to Sam I thought your voice sounded exactly like Geddy Lee :D oops, I slipped into irrelevancy. Only a joke - not trying to be a smartass.

BSabbath, I was kidding (sarcasm doesnt translate well when typed, I tend to forget that).

The reason I said that was that many times when I ask for mixing comments people always talk more about the song. Thats all, I am really not a dick, well maybe I am, i've got it written down somewhere, I cant remember right now.

Triple M- thanks, thats kind of what I think to, I noticed that spalpping a pretend mastering job on it in T Racks seemed to sparkle it up a bit. But really I am trying make sure that someone on here doesnt give me the news that there is something way fucked up about it. Thanks for your comments.

Its the Baritone voice that give away the direct rip off of Rush isnt it?

It appears I am the bonehaead here! my bad! (nothing new) :D

I hear what your saying about people commenting on the song itself too much and not the mix.. It can be annoying if you dont want it..

Anyway, I wouldnt have thought of 'Rush' if you didnt mention it.

I might add that Rush is one of my favorite bands, and I am going to see them in 2 weeks at Jones Beach.. (10th row.) :)

Sometimes I can only comment on the song if I like it enough and dont know how to help with the mix.. I liked this song..

The recording sounds great to me except for the dullness your asking about.. someone else with a brain can help I'm sure..

I liked this song a lot but wouldnt have thought of Rush had you not mentioned it..

Feel free to destroy my tunes now.. I deserve it! :)

Its cool Sabbath, I was just messing w/ you. Like I said sarcasm rarely transfers very well. The RUSH comment was me just being a jerk. RUSH is about as far from our torch songs as can be.

I read the title of your post again (dull sounding mix) and listened again with that in mind.

Since your voice is a little on the baritone side, I wonder if you couldn't try to bring some of the higher lows (somewhere in the 500-700 hz range or even a bit higher)? Then bring things down a bit in some lower ranges. You might want to play with that - it might brighten things up a bit.

I would say something similar on the piano track.

Just some thoughts.

...I'm way off here, but IMO much of this is a tracking issue. How did you mic the drums, specifically what mics did you use on the overheads? What was the signal chain? Did you use a mixer?

I'm just thinking of the obvious here, but adding in what's not there while mixing (the highs) is much harder than having it there in the first place. The snare also sounds a bit tubby, and there's very little snare sound. I actually liked the sound of the voice, and think that was tracked and mixed OK.

If this were me (without re-tracking), I'd roll off the snare's low end (below 200Hz). If re-tracking the drums isn't possible... I'm not sure how you'd add brightness and shimmer without an exciter, or cranking up noise with EQ. In my admittedly small knowledge and experience, it seems the high end in a track comes largely from the snare, cymbals, and voice (again -- probably just stating the obvious). If those were tracked with the highs intact (the 16kHz octave from 10kHz to 20kHz), you have some massive phase cancellations there! ;)

This song actually reminds me more of Queen (the music) as sung by someone like Morrison.
