Het everyone! I was just internet shopping for a good condensor mic and thought that id ask what you guys thought. I'm looking for something with a high SPL to handle my guitar cabs (I also want to blend it with a SM-57) and something descent for metal vocals. I would like clarity and deffinition but like everyone else Im on a budget. :( I was looking at a AT 2020. what do you guys think?
Thanks

Clarity, definition for metal vocals, guitars - Drums - kick, floor toms, brass...

I wouldn't be looking at condensers... Try EV's RE-20.

Actually I was using the 57 right on the cab and wanted to add the condensor for to blend a little bit of warmth and fullness.
In the past Ive used the EV ND mics and really didnt like them. Granted I used them in a live setting and found them to be really brash and tinny.
As far as the vox just think queensryche type vocals to testament style raspy yet intelligable vox.
does this change anyones oppinion?

every company makes cheep mics, the re16 will be anything but thin.

cheep condensers on the other hand, bright and harsh.
buy that mic and some day you will throw it out, but the ev you'll probably be able to use forever.

I have an AT2020 sitting in a box of mics/cables... I'll hook it up when I'm looking for that mystery sound... I like to have it around... I say give it a try... However, there's no lowcut switch on that mic, so you might need to do some serious EQing on the low end...

Golden :)

At-3035 can handle pretty hi spl's and is new at $200.00. look around and you might be able to get a free stand and cord with it.

I've had mine a few years and love it. I would not hesitate to throw it in front of a guit cab (if I wanted too) I'll stick to the 57 there. About the only thing I wouldn't do with it is put it in a kick. Handels metal vocals great at 4 to 6 inches with the 10db pad & hi pass on. Pop filter of course.

Used Sennheiser 421

So, if you are on a budget, what is that budget? (the more information you provide in your question, the better answers you will get.)

Like John I would not suggest looking at condensers. I think his RE20 suggestion is great, but having recently bought one I can attest to the fact that they are not really a budget mic.

You could do a lot worse than a used Senn 421. It is an industry standard mic that can take all types of abuse and performs pretty darn well for the applications.

All of the new $200-300 mics (with the exception of the SM57 that you already have) are likely going to be traded out over your career. The Senn 421 (or SM7 or RE20) will be in your mic locker for the rest of your life.

Buy a mic that is a real long term tool for you and you will thank me later.

Scratch that they are on ebay for $130.00 from a few places. Can't be beat for the money imho.
