is a dual processor DAW a necessity if i'm using a lot VST's
or will a powerfull single processor unit be enough as long as it's powerful ( i now it's subjective, but hey :D)

And also is a processor simple enough to take off and put back without risk of breaking a piece off. i might have to do that to get my soundcard to be happy :D LoL

I think anything over 2GHz gives you a LOT of cpu power to handle a lot of VSTs.
Its wiser to go for a single CPU setup. Not all software and OS's can take benefit of an extra CPU. So just safe yourself some headaches and go for a single CPU.

CPUs can break. Placing the cooler requires a bit of a delicate touch. AMD CPUs are somewhat more vunerable than Intel P4s. But as long as you read the instructions and use your head, you should be fine.

Yea.. probably a waste. You might benefit if the app is made to use dual CPUs. Figure you'd be better off taking the money for a dual mainboard and 2 cpus and going with a 1 cpu setup that's more intense...

More and more apps start to use duals, but you should always check. Nuendo and sonar are using it. If it will help with your particular problem is another issue. Duals are addictive.

Putting heatsinks on and taking off again is no prblem. IF you take your time, use proper tools and have space around you and plenty of light.

thanks guys , got some debating to do here, new card or drop a proc

...or invest in a DSP card

do i get to keep my dual processors

thanks

All I know is I'm going DUAL with my next box (behh, its not even gonna be a box, ill put it on the wall).

Here's what I would buy as a DAW:

Dual MP 2400+
3*512 ddr pc2700
3*120gig maxtor sata drives
mobo with sata raid onboard

now the config:

use 2 sata drives in raid0 and install your OS, appz, games on this. this will also be your drive for recording and working on your projects.

use the last sata drive to store everything else.
when you have projects pending, you move them to the last drive to store them. You only keep what youre working on on the first drive with raid0.

amazing transfer speed and less lag in operations.

damn that's mad storage capacity, well at least for me :) Lol

Cubase, these days, also supports dual processors. I know SX and SX2 do, and I'm pretty sure even VST5.1 did too.

Don't forget that you will need registered ram! Some boards may let you use unregistered ram, but only for a max of 2 dimm slots, since you want 3 you will have to use registered ram.

I'm not sure, but you might check if the 2400MP needs PC2700. I always tought that PC2100 was enough (and with registered ram it will make a difference moneywise).

Are there mobos with onboard sata raid for the dual athlons???

I use a simple dual xp1600+ with 1GB ram and scsi U160. Suits me fine, plenty of speed. One of these days I'm going to put a second xp2500+ in this pc (I botched up the job of unlocking the second xp2500+ and ruined the cpu :( )
