Look Mom, I can play!
I am just about to jump in the deep and and make my computer a dual boot system. I will have win 98 with all my business/family stuff on it and then win xp with Home Studio 2002 (Sonar Lite).

I have a PII 400 meg with 760meg Ram. I have a creative dvd cd player and a ricoh cd burner. I have 2 drives, both 7600rpm and one is 10meg and the other 20meg. I also have a soundblaster Live! Platignum sound card and a spare soundblaster AWE 64 Gold soundcard.

I am looking for some advice how to configure the hard drives and the o/s. Should I put both o/s on the same drive or should I use one h/d for xp/music and the other for win 98 and all the other stuff? And how should I connect the hard discs and the two cd's? One hard disc and one cd on each loom or both hard discs on one and both cd's on the other?

I will use Partion Magic 7.0 to perform the partitioning, I hear good reviews of that software.

My setup is almost completely identical to yours.

I too had 98 and XP on in the beginning when I was still "testing the waters" with XP.

After a while I was spending my time EXCLUSIVELY in XP. I do 3D modelling, animation and video editing on top of running HS2002. Everything works fine and having all these different apps in XP really doesn't affect performance IMHO.

XP has the same administrative tools as far as user managment as NT and 2000 so you can setup profiles where certain accounts have NO ACCESS WHATSOEVER to certain apps, files or directories.

I'd just eliminate 98 all together...

Even if you do still chose to keep 98, you should install that FIRST. I would have to dissagree with Emeric. It is a much simpler process to install XP after 98 as the XP boot manager will automatically detect the 98 FAT partition and add it to a OS Boot menu. I have done it in this manner with NT and 2000.

That way, you don't need any additional software like System Commander.

When you say XP, I assume you are reffering to XP Professional, correct? I would stay away from XP Home.

Thanks guys that was very helpful. I have bookmarked the great web site you pointed me at Emeric, an idiots guide is exactly what I was looking for.:)

But the question of XP Pro or Home has me worried, I was going for the home version as I didn't want dual CPU support. What are the other issues I have missed here, brzilian? Thanks for your reply.
