what should i use to Record drums with Sonar 4?

i dont know how to play drums, but in my bands i used to come up with alot in my head and tell the drummer what i wanted.

im looking for a program or machine or something. that will allow me to get drum sounds of a punky, hardcore type sound and just simply lay them out into a drum track easily.

i am a newbie and as of right now know nothing about recording. just looking for the right things to get started. just concerned about drums because i have no idea what do to about them.

Look at my reply in the drumming forum, you can use the piano roll in Sonar to write your drum lines, get a nice soft synth to play them. Or use the session drummer to get some basic beats down without the frustration of note-by-note composing.

How do I use the piano roll? I'm clicking the keys but no sound. I only have onboard sound. Is there anyway I can use this for writing drum lines?

Set up a softsynth and direct that MIDI track to use the softsynth as its output. Then you should be in business. :)

cheepest / best is find a decent Radio Shack, or Casio or Yamaha Synthesizer for about 10 to 50 washingtons at a yard sale. Just make sure it has either midi out or headphone out jack. goodluck

Session drummer is pretty ok. And the pattern brush tool is a godsend at times - easily overlooked. Personally I'd like a small midi drum controller but it haven't made it to the top of my priority list yet.

btw. A tip as the question was in that direction. nusoft/Dash has a groupbuy on their new drumVSTi DK+. Tested it and it's quite powerful and includes rhythms. I'm on the fence myself 'cause I've already put money on Sampletank XL this month and wusikstation last month. But for someone looking for a good drum VSTi it's a great oppurtunity. It ends this weekend.
