King of Bling
Hey crew:

I posted this song a few days ago, then I got a real drummer to contribute some tracks, and I'd like some opinions on whether I overdid it.

Song: "Fall Away"
Vocals - Jaimee Harris & Her Dad
Drums - John Wooten ("jwoo10")
Everything Else - Mark Buster (mbuster)

Mark did this song, then he sent me a version with no vocals and no drums, so all I did was add our vocals...then I added jwoo10's drums, which I mixed...maybe too hot.

I gotta' say, as impressed as I was with this "pop/rock" song, I was equally impressed with jwoo's drums...this could NOT have been easy.

Thoughts?

thanks if you can help

Well, my first impression was there was too much drums (especially the kick) - but before I posted I brought up "Behind These Hazel Eyes" - Drums are BIG in that mix - yours is in-line with that. :D

This is one hot tune man. Excellent writing and performance by all. I would say the drums are a bit too hot (esp. kick), but then NL5 says they are on par with current stuff so I'm not sure. We need a whole bunch more people to listen to this (i.e. enjoy it) and give their opinion. Fabulous drumming too by the way. Good one!

the mix sounds fine. i don't really notice anything spectacular about the drumming, but its totally not my style of music so i don't know much. a big thing i notice is thatyour mp3 encoder is downright awful, its all i can hear on the cymbals. or maybe somethings just out of phase?

Drums aren't too hot, not if you're getting that newer sound. Sounds like the modern stuff. Love the tune. Great job all around.

My first impression was the drums sound great, epecially the snare and kick...I thought for a second to be so clean a drum machine...then I heard the "realness" of the part. If that is a tracked drumline than consider me sold. I love the song, and I must say the drums rock. Tight in playing, obviously, but GREAT recording of the kit as well. The only thing I would add to the final mix is more mids to the vocals and less ultra-high frequency....don't know the Hz, sorry, but there is some sibilance and less "impact" in the mid/upper registers of the vocal track. Awesome job, man. :) :) :)

Haha, sorry i didnt see this thread :O:O i guess I HAVE to listen to it again now ;) (sweet!)

lol...my bad. I wish I could delete that other thread. Thanks a ton for your comments in the other thread.

seeker - great ears. I mean, right before I posted, I scooped the mids in her vocals b/c I was getting some brain darts, but I've jacked with it some more and I think it's closer. Thanks a lot.

NL5 - Funny you should mention that song, lol...can you say "Reference Mix?" Seriously...thanks for listening.

ido1957 - you're too nice...thanks.

treymonfauntre - thanks for listening. I know what you're talking about, but it's not the encoder. Most of the "whishy-ness" comes whenever he's hitting the crash on 1/8 notes constantly...I had to use a LOT of subtractive EQ in the high end on the Tom Tracks, and I think it probably did introduce some phase problems. Good ears.

emergencyexit - Hey...THANK YOU, lol.

Have a great day everybody.

Nothing wrong with the drums, here. They soung good to me. But drums can never be too loud for me, so take that for what it's worth. This is overall a great performance by everyone and a good song. I have to say that there is at least one time in the third verse (and maybe twice) that the drums do something that itsn't "wrong" but sounds like he just threw it off for a split-second, I can't put my finger on it. But overall great song and sound.

I like the tune. Drums are big, but really fit well, for me at least. They don't step on the vocals or bass, and the guitar sits well, so they just add some punch. Nice bass playing in this. Really fills the tune out.
All in all, I'd say awesome tune. It's very full, yet clean.
