I'm a drummer who wants to start recording myself for practice and for fun. My drums are set up in an unfinished basement so acoustics aren't that great. I've already got mics for my drums. I was just thinking about getting a mixer and some computer recording software. Any sugguestions? What kind of interface do I use from my mixer to my computer? Thanks for any help!

if it's just for hearing yourself back you don't need much more than what you have. Get a soundcard that you can connect your mic's to (one with microphone preamps) and setup the mics and play. You'll probably only be able to use two mics at a time using this technique, but I'm suggesting that cause it sounds like your goal is not to create professional drum tracks, but just to hear yourself play.

Something cheap from m-audio ought to do the trick for you.

I'd like to use a mixer because I've got lot's of mics for the drums
(5 tom mics, snare mic, bass drum mic, and 2 overheads). I know I'm just recording drums, but I want to get good at it and get as professional a sound as I can. I'd also like some software that lets me edit the drums (loops, layers, stuff like that). I might even add some electronic drums later. Basically I want a home studio just for drums! Please let me know of some more options.

oh my. i don't have experience with recording real drums at home but it sounds like you're gonna need a lot of preamps for all of those mics (9) so i see why you want a mixer.

lot of guys around here make do with four mics. Bass, Snare, 2 overheads.

i'll let someone else answer what's the best route. good luck to ya!
