What is the best way to get a good rock sound from my toms....any help will be needed.

Try This.

Here's a thought. First of all, when I'm playing rock I head my toms with clear ambassadors.I tune the top head a half step higher than the resonator, I use moongels or rings on the top head and I use a piece of moleskin to dampen the bottom head. This will give you a solid thud on all of your toms. You'll get no ringing or reverberation if that's what you're after. I only do this for heavy rock pieces, when I'm playing blues or jazz, I want a bit more resonance .
If you're looking for a real warm sound, try the Remo fibreskin heads. I've been using them on my jazz kit on my toms, my snares all have coated Ambassador, and they're great for playing with acoustic instruments, but if you're using heavy sticks, then you get a more thudding sound with some reverberation, but it takes less to dampen them. Don't go by what you're hearing from the throne, test them through a room mic to see how the sound carries.

I've been through MANY different kinds of heads for my drums searching for the right sound. At the current moment I have Evans Hydrolics on all my toms and an Evans ST dry on my snare. These have been the best heads I've ever used, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to stick with them. My band plays hard rock/heavy metal and these heads have produced the best sound thus far. As for tuning, it really depends on the kind of set you have, shell thickness, material, size, ect, that all effects the way you tune your set, it also depends on the heads too. I tune my set by ear so I'm not much help unless I'm able to hear your set.

Wow! Whatta site!

Thanks Gridge! That is a great site you posted. I thought that I was pretty well informed and experienced in tuning drums, but this site had a few tricks and ideas that I never thought of.I've definitely saved it and will be printing it out to re-read again and again.
