What is 'your taste'? It seems like you are getting the sound that your setup should give you.

I don't know what my taste is. I'm trying to find it, lol. I used to like the sound from it being stuffed with pillows, but I felt like a change and decided that i wanted to learn to tune properly. I've got the rest of the kit sounding quite nice, for me, but can't get the kick to sound good. What would be a good mic placement?

Yeah you'd think that, but I've managed to get quite a nice sound out of the other old heads.

If you want a dryer sound (less resonance) put a hole in the resonant head. Just the standard 4 inch off-center hole will dry the kick out a bit. It will give you less sustain.

Yeah that happened with my pearl kit. I actually don't want a drier sound, I want sustain, but would like it to sound decent. I think I'm asking way too much, but i still wanna give it a go.

i had asked this earlier but no one answered...sorry for asking again but i really need to know this...

will the "Drum-Dial" or that "watch" one from Tama help at all for tuning drum heads? im having a lot of trouble with my 12" tom. (Evans G2 Clear)

Only if you know what tension you want the lugs at. They also don't work at all if your lugs are dirty or hang up.

He means if the lugs are rusty, dirty, or have a hard time being tensioned. *Un-lubed!* Dip your tension rods in a bit of vaseline and you will not have this problem.

If your lugs don't spin freely. All those things do is measure the tension (or torque) on the lug. If the lug binds or is hard to turn without the head on, you won't get an accurate reading.
