Hi Guys,

Just started home recording with some friends using Cubase 5 LE and was wondering what is the best (free if possible) way to get some drum tracks. We currently dont have a drummer so are having to use a tuner with a drum beat on it.

I dont know the best way about getting drum tracks recorded and as there is no drum plug in with the LE edition im at a bit of a loss of what to do. I can't really afford anything expensive at the moment either.

Thanks

You can get cheap / free drum sample sets and program with a MIDI editor if that's what you're after, or you can get a real drummer to play and record for you, however if you're just starting you may find the latter option difficult to organise.

Download the free starter kit from one of the major sample libraries (I use Addictive Drums but there are others) and see if you can get it all to work out nicely with your software, which presumably has a MIDI editor onboard. It's a very limited kit, but it will give you an idea of how this is done and if it's what you want to do. You can then whip around the band and get everyone to pony up to buy a full kit of samples if it works for you. You'll get premade MIDI beats with these things too, if you're lazy, or don't really know how to drum. Good starters...

Alternatively you can find random MIDI samples all over the place but you'll still need the drum samples for them to work.

Or, find a drummer, although recording real drums requires a bit of recording expertise and capex, I think you'll find...

Cheers for the info,

No luck finding a drummer, they are like gold dust.....i was thinking that i would use the midi editor just was unsure of how to use it and where to get it from.

I will check out that sample kit, i only want a basic kit atm so i can lay down a steady drum beat to jam/record to, i have a tendency to get faster as i play :oS

Check out what passes for your local WHSmiths for computer music recording magazines. These very often have free "lite" drum programs on the included DVD and always shedloads of samples. The mags also often have lists of safe free download sites.

Passing rant: I have all but given up trying possibly interesting free music sites because they all want you to download a download manager or a fekking Installer first...Well screw'em!

Dave.

I Know this is a pure n00b question but how easy is it to use these samples & drum programs with Cubase?

Cheers

Cubase I don't know, but a MIDI editor is a MIDI editor, at least as far as drums goes, where you're only controlling the volume of the hit.

It's easy if you know how to actually put together a beat... ie. what a drummer does... and as I said before, there's a zillion free MIDI files out there you can import and learn from.

I do MIDI drums all the time... like anything, what you put into it will reflect back in what you get out...

As a starter, get the free Addictive kit and play around. You'll pick it up pretty quickly. It ain't rocket surgery...

Cheers Guys

When i get a chance i think i might list my Kit etc and see if anyone has suggestions.

Done some recording and it all sounds pretty good anyway but as with all musicians i wanna get it perfect lol
