Drum Set Recommendations

I am not a drum player, but would like to learn. I plan on getting the basics online(how to hold the sticks, etc.) and then spend some quality time messing with it to learn how to play. Do you have any recommendations for a drum set that plays decently yet is sold for a reasonable price?

If your just looking to start out, anything is fine. I would say when you really start gettin into it, buy a nice set, but for now, anything to bang sticks on, lol. A local SamAsh or Guitar Center might have a good deal for you.

I had the same bug recently. Picked up one of those cheapo Pulse Pro kits from Musician's Friend. I've been putting a ton of time into practicing lately, and I'm learning a little about what makes it so cheap...where they cut corners, etc.

However...I've changed a few heads, spent a lot of time tuning it - and it really doesn't sound that bad. When I hook up the mics and record it, it comes across amazingly well. For the $250 I paid for it, I'm damn impressed.

Tuning is the big thing, IMO...if you're willing to spend the time learning how to properly tune your kit, you can generally get some nice sounds out of pretty much anything.

Depending on your budget, I highly suggest the Pearl Forum .
If you can afford the $600, go for it! It is the best entry level kit your money can buy. You can definitely get cheaper beginner kits , but you can't get a better value.

By upgrading the heads down the road, that kit could easily take you through your intermediate phase as well as beginning. The drums and hardware are very good!


One thing to keep in mind when comparing prices is what's included in the deal. For example, the Pearl kit comes with cymbal stands, hi-hats and a crash/ride cymbal (not great , but something to get you started) With other kits, you might have to buy cymbals extra. So, shop wisely. Good luck. And have fun drumming!

Pearl Forum

Im with kesterdevine on this one. i myself have a 5pc. pearl forum kit. im a beginner ive been playing for 2 years and a half and im only 15 but i must say that this drumset is awesome. i have the regular 16x22 bass drum, 10x12, 11x13, mounted toms, 16x16 floor tom and 51/2x14 snare drum. i soon plan 2 add 14x14 floor tom and a 10x8 or 10x10 tom not sure yet. i think im gonna go with the 10x8 for sure. and maybe just maybe another bass drum. but the extra floor tom and small tom for sure but im not quite sure of the bass drum maybe ill just buy double bass drum pedals. but CloveWC if you can spare the 600 go ahead its worth it.

If you don't mind some advice from an "old fart"...


The single biggest mistake I see newbie drummers make is slamming the sh*t out of their drums. My guess is that they see their favorite drummers on MTV bashing their drums like there's no tomorrow, and figure that's the way you're supposed to hit them.

Every drum will "choke" if hit hard enough. If it's a economy "starter" set, even more so. Of course, if you're playing with a loud band that doesn't mic the drums, you've go no choice but to bash 'em, but when you do have the choice, play the drums for tone, and let the sound system do the work.

I've been a drummer for 34 years now, and if I had a dollar for everytime someone complimented me on my tone, I wouldn't have to work anymore!
