If you don't mind some advice from an "old fart"...
The single biggest mistake I see newbie drummers make is slamming the sh*t out of their drums. My guess is that they see their favorite drummers on MTV bashing their drums like there's no tomorrow, and figure that's the way you're supposed to hit them.
Every drum will "choke" if hit hard enough. If it's a economy "starter" set, even more so. Of course, if you're playing with a loud band that doesn't mic the drums, you've go no choice but to bash 'em, but when you do have the choice, play the drums for tone, and let the sound system do the work.
I've been a drummer for 34 years now, and if I had a dollar for everytime someone complimented me on my tone, I wouldn't have to work anymore!
