What is the most basic way of recording drums to the computer so that each track can be controlled individually on the computer? For instance controlling the snare and bass drum in two separate tracks instead of the whole drum kit being recorded into one track

Buy an audio interface. Either USB or firewire. You can plug your mics in it and connect it to your computer/laptop. Then using a DAW (Reaper, Cubase, etc.) you can do whatever you want with separate tracks. Examples of audio interfaces:

What is the difference between the alesis usb 2.0 and the alesis firewire? Do they both allow you to mess with each track separately?

Which Alesis firewire are you taking about? Yeah you can handle each track separately. The difference between them is, the usb 2.0 connects to the computer via the usb port, and the firewire connects via the firewire port Some people say firewire is faster and more reliable, then again some people say they're the same. How many tracks do you want to to be able to record at once?

I want to be able to record my drum set. Two overhead mics with a mic on the snare and a mic on the bass drum. i want to be able to eq my each track on the computer separately. Is the presonus firestudio the thing i need?

Yeah, you can definitely do all that with the Firestudio. But you'll need a firewire laptop/computer first. Go to PreSonus and check out the minimum computer requirements.
