hi there,

which preamps are good for drum recording?

I'll use:

421's on toms
sennheiser 602 on bass drum
sm57 on snare
441 on snare bottom
Oktava mk012 as overheads
thomann ribbon mics as room mics

i'M considering:

dmp3's
and syteks's
i heard that the rane ms1b isn't sounding that nice on percussive instruments

I'd use a 421 on the kick instead.

Of those pres listed, I'd go with the syteks first. They have more headroom.
The DMP-3s are resonably good but you can clip them fairly easily if close micing.

I use RNPs for my drums and occasionally the DMP-3 for overheads if I can mic at 5 feet or more away.

tom,
I was considering the use of 2 RNP's for drum tracking. kick, snare, and L/R OH's. Got any samples you'd be willing to share? Does the RNP do well as an OH preamp?

Thanks!

Yes the RNPs do wonderful for overheads.
If i could afford 2 more RNPs I'd totally dedicate at least 6 channels just to drums. As it is I have 4 channels of RNP, 2 of DMP-3 ,1 ART tube MP and a Meek MQ3.
I use the Meek for kick (because it has an opto compressor and EQ on board) and the MP for snare (because I like the grit it gets when my snare pushes the limit) and the RNPs for the rest of the toms and OH.I'll see what I have to post. Do you want some drums in a music mix or just solo drums?

Tom

Whatever you got would be fine. If you have the same song in both solo drums and a music mix, that'd be great.
