Drum Recording tips

For one, I think you could tune the snare tighter. Also, the recording sounds mono. There's no natural spread. Your playing is pretty sloppy too. I think you have a good foundation, but are still pretty far from home.

Describe your recording setup.

I wasn't trying to impress with my playing so ok I know that was a bit sloppy but my setup is M-Audio profire 2626 DW Custom Drums SM57 on the top of the snare I don't mic the bottom. For my 10' 12' rack toms and my 14' floor tom I use the sennheiser e604's. IRL my snare is actually pretty tight.

Well in Pro Tools 8 which I'm still using I have it set as Stereo for when I bounce it

You can bounce it however you want. It still sounds mono. What's your overhead situation?

My overhead mics? They are Samson co1's I should get some different overheads like shure's but what would you recommend?

It doesn't really matter what mics you use at this point. How are they set up? Why does this sound so centered? Do you pan the overheads with the mixer?

Your sounds don't sound bad, but the kit as a whole doesn't sound great the way you have it mixed. Put some instruments on it and see what happens.

It sounds good with other instruments but I'm in a tiny room so mics are setup the way they can fit in but I'll check out the recorder man style if you think I should or I didn't realized how centered it was until it was pointed out. but with other instruments it sounds decent but I really wanna get that punchy sorta ringy snare sound. Any tips?

Tune it tighter. Don't muffle it.

Ok I do have a ring on it but I just want it to crack a little but I'll try it with my ring off and tune it tighter

Yes, I would pan the toms to match the overhead panning (i.e. either audience or drummer's perspective). Snare and kick up the middle.
