Hi folks.

Today, me and my drummer have been recording some drums for some demo's. Just want some other, better ears to have a listen, advise on getting them to sound a little better. Here's what we did.....I know I can get better and tomorrow will be better. This is my first time recording drums!

Setting Sun

The set up I'm using is an 8 Channel Mackie mixer. Bass drum, Snare, Tom and Floor Tom mic'd up for 1 LDC for an overhead.

Sadly my soundcard only has 2 inputs sound everything (drum-wise) is being mixed in the mackie and recorded to a single track in Reaper.

Ignore the Guitar, Bass and Vocal. They are just put on temp to see how the drums sound in the mix.

Any advice/pointers welcomed most graciously?

Some nits.

I can hear the room the drums are recorded in.

The drums seem mono. No stereo at all. I realize they were all recorded into a mixer, but I'm sure the mixer has panning knobs, doesn't it? Just an idea.

The cymbals outweigh the snare.

The boom of the bass is incredibly prominent (this is a good thing, IMO).

With what you're working with, I say the biggest issue is the room and mono panning.

Sounds really oldschool. If you're going for a very old-ish retro sound, this works well.

Keep at it!

Cheers for the reply.

Yeah the room is not the best. Just making do with what we've got so far to be honest. The attack of the snare and room sound are pretty much what bug me with it. And maybe the toms being a touch loud.

We're recording tomorrow so I can address these things.

There's no panning at all on the mix. I tend to record in Mono as I only have one ear and hear things better that way! Although I do plan on panning. This was just a set up, mic up, level up and record test to see what kind of sound I could make.

I'll keep at it and keep posting results. See what people think. Can only get better. ;)
