Unpossible!
I generally use SDC's for overheads - Cardoid pointing down at the kit. Would it be better to use omni LDC's to capture more ambience?

Thanks.

That's a question I have asked myself several times.
For my entire recording "career" - aside from going into professional studios - I've done virtually all of my recording in 1 room, with usually at least 2 instruments live - so for drumtracking purposes, I never attempted omni overheads - heck I had a hard enough time keeping the bass guitar out of my tracks without worrying about what would happen if using omni's! :p

But I have wondered how an omni's as overheads would sound... Obviously, you've have to have a better "sounding" room, because the omni's are going to pick up more of it.

I would really like to pick up a set of those Behringer omni's when I can and do a little experimenting with using them as overheads. I've heard some great things about them. We had a set of Earthworks for awhile - but they were too sensitive for me.

What does that mean?

I was trying to record some quiet passages my brother was playing on his harmonium (it's a little hand-pumped organ that I got him from India one Christmas) and we were using an Earthworks omni - and it picked up a freaking truck driving by on the street behind us. And we are in a room with 12" thick walls on the FRONT of the house with 2 rooms and an entire house between us and that street! Sorry, I don't need that kind of sensitivity for home recording. LOL I have a hard enough time getting good clean recordings as it is with the gear I have - I'll leave that kind of sensitivity to the pro studios.

omni? sure why not?
unless it sounds bad.........same old rule

i use my earthworks sro's as overheads plenty (not as much as i use the 012's) and really dig them.
not sure why, but the louder the drummer the better they work.
probably something to do with my room.

Why large-diaprhagm omnis? Small-diaphgragm omnis work great and, despite what you'd figure intuitively, will typically give you all the low end you need. True omnidirectional microphones exhibit no proximity effect, so there's no decrease in bass response with distance. If your kit is well-balanced and tuned right you can get a fairly massive sound with just an omni or two overhead.

As for the sound of the room, of course it helps if it's a good-sounding room, but even if it's not the best you can move the microphones a little closer to the kit than you might normally feel comfortable doing (again, because there's no proximity effect).

Ummmm, because that's what I have. I have the following available for OH's -

UM92.1S Pair (LDC's - Omni or Cardoid)
KM184 pair (SDC - Cardoid only)
MXL603 pair (SDC - Cardoid only)
4033 pair (LDC - Cardoid Only)

I have been using the KM184's, but think I may try the UM92.1's.
