Hi, I'm looking for a set of drum microphones on a budget. I don't know much about microphones but have found this set with some positive reviews on various websites.

If anyone owns these (or has done in the past) could you tell me a little about them? Or if anyone knows of anything in a similar price range I would much appreciate any reccomendations.

Cheers,

Dean

Hmmm, won't let me post the link for some reason. It's the Samson 5 Piece Drum Mic Kit, I'll try and get the link up at some point...

Get a pair of Naiants for overheads, a SM57 for the snare, and something else for your kick, depending on your budget. Could range from a 200$ Audix D6 or AKG 112 to a 50$ Kickball.
And for the overheads use the recorderman technique.
Hope I was helpful

The naints are nice, don't get me wrong. But they lack lack the stereo image due to being omnis.

Huh? Use a Jecklyn disk or space pair set up. Stereo heaven.... Of course XY won't work.

Two words: mono compatibility.

Some of us still care about that. It's important if you plan to broadcast the signal over FM or if you expect someone to possibly compress it to MP3 with a joint stereo setting. :)

i looked up the Samson 5 Piece Drum Mic Kit, they cost $149.97.
and come with no overhead mics.

you might need to raise the price a bit, but to stay close to that price range maybe some:

Samson C02 for overheads (xy)
and a Samson Q for kick

just a little less than $200, and i think two overheads and a kick will sound better than 5 dynamic mics. Unless you were going to add condensers to your 5 piece package, then that would be the Samson 7Kit.
you could save $50, it all depends on what type of style you are recording to determine how many mics you really need.
I use a pair of NT5's
an SM57
and a BETA52
four mics work fine for me, i could actually do without the 57, but then it would be a task to try an add reverb to the snare.

just my 2cents.

Or post anything on Youtube. Youtube is all mono. I found this out when a DVD I mixed ended up posted. Luckily, I took that into account when I mixed it. But the bass is a little louder in mono because of the stereo effect i put on the one guitar.

Speaking of YouTube, It appears that Vagodeoz and I are sold on the recorderman method for recording drums, which is available on Youtube (search "recorderman")

So, If you have $149, you could get the MXL 993 stereo pair, use the recorderman method, and get a really nice drum sound.

If you have a 3rd mic, place it far away (down the hall or in another room) for a nice natural delay+reverb to fill-out the sound.

Usually I'd stay out of this, but in terms of polar patterns and mic techniques, that is not specific to me. Go back to the thread where Harvey posted his drum overhead samples, and check the stereo image on those, and check them for mono compatibility.

me no agree, very big on spaced omni's as of late.

the msh's are the best you can do for the money.

OKAY I WAS PLANNNING ON GETING naints... SO THESE WONT BE ASS GOOD FOR CREATING A STEREO IMAGE???

They are omni mics, so you will need to use a spaced pair or other mic placement. It will not work in an XY configuration.

when u mean space.. how far apart would they be from eachother.

opposite ends of the kit is good, no need to go crazy.

adjust to taste.

Google 'spaced pair' 'ortf' and 'jecklin disc' to find out more about different stereo techniques.

the recordman technique seems quite similar to Glyn Johns.
