While I wait for my kick mic (Beta 52) to come in at the local store, I figured I'd put the rest of my mics up and see how it sounded.

Light compression on the snare, a little EQ on everything. Nudged the snare track for phase coherence.

Glyn Johns technique. Audio Technica AT2020 and AT2021 as overheads, the 2020 on the right. SM57 on the snare.

What do you think, soundwise? I know I'm a shitty player, my main instrument is guitar.

Sounds pretty good, man. I've heard drummers that couldn't keep a beat that good... :D
I'd like to hear it after you get the 52.

Peace!

Everything seems a little distant in the mix, but at least it's all balanced in that way. I am not too keen on the snare tone, but that's a personal taste thing. It's not bad, just not my personal favorite.
The real test will be how it sounds in the mix. Post again after you get the 52, and a full mix to share.

Thanks guys.

Unfortunately, the toms are going to sound a bit distant, as they're not close mic'd. I've only got 4 pres and 4 mics, and not enough money to add any more at the moment.

This is just meant for some basement demos, so hopefully it'll suffice.

Here's a track with the 52, I was just guessing on the levels as usual, as my headphones are a touch bass shy, and the hi-fi speakers I'm using for monitors have a very hyped bass.

Compression and EQ on the snare and kick, that's about it...

I'll have a mix in the next month -- right now, I've got the computer and tracking area in separate rooms (separate floors, too), so it's hard for me to multitrack with myself. I'll be getting a new computer soon that can go right next to the tracking area.

It sounds real good with the 52 in there. I think you've got a very workable drum sound going. It's hard to say more, because for me, the real test is always in the mix. If I were starting with that sound, I'd feel good about tracking a tune or two and seeing how the kit sounds in the mix.

Go for it and post a mix when you get there.

I have a feeling that when you bring it in a mix you're going to have way too much cymbal and not enough kick and snare... which should always be the meat and potatoes of any drum sound. While this is usually corrected at the source (IE having a skilled, dynamically competent drummer who has worked in a studio before and can balance the weight of his hits with head and cymbal choice), you can obviously do a lot in the mix.

I also miss your other snare sound... it had a lot more midrange pop and would 'pop' better in an overall mix.
