I'm looking for some feedback on this drum mic set up.

Bass: AKG D-112
Rack tom: AKG C418
Floor tom: AKG C418
Snare: Shure SM-57
Overheads: 2 AKG C-1000S's

(Any suggestions on a hi hat mic for a reasonable price...? Or would I be okay with picking up the hi hat from the overheads?)

Obviously, the set up could be improved. But I'm just looking for any type of response...how are these mics? Are there any minor improvements I can/should make? Anything to reconsider?

Personally if anything I usually wish I could get LESS hi-hat. I honestly think the only time I would mic a hi-hat was to filp phase on the thing to cut some of it out of the rest.

I think you should be able to pick up the hi-hat fine with bleed from the snare mic and also the overheads. If you wanted to mic it seperately, I'm really not sure what kind of mic would be best.

I'd rethink those c100's if I were you. I've found some uses for mine (toms. trumpet section) but they sound very harsh on overheads. Probably because they are harsh. Maybe get one of those cheap behringer omnis if you have a good room. Or else a couple of MXL 603's if you have dark cymbals, or those Oktava's if you have bright ones.

I personally don't like the c1000 as overheads, way too harsh. You could get a pair of rode nt5 or c4's from studio projects. And I absolutely hate the c418. They're tough to position without falling off, the cable shorts out and are near impossible to replace, and don't sound all that great. I'd go with the audix d series on the toms, or shure sm57's. Those are easy to get a great sound and versitile enough to use on a plethora of other things.

the goods...

the 1000's have thier use, but i havent tried em on overheads.
as for some good overheads...try some neumann km84's(good sparkle, and easy as pie to place) or..my new favorite, a matched pair of BLUE dragonflies. warm round crispy overheads with those mics. When i heard em i just about fell off my chair. try x-y'ing em'.

peace.

as for a reason able hi hat mic, go pick up an akg sc1 cheap and sound great. heck, if you were on a budget, go get two of em and use those as overheads, and use your 1000 on the hat.Anyways, they work great.

peace.

no one has ever complained about not enough hi-hat in a mix. i would not mic it. even with just overheads, you will get a ton. the sm-57 is good on snare because it is very directional and good at rejecting hi-hat. i have a superlux cm-h8a large diaphram condensor... you can get one for around a hundred bucks and it makes a good room mic or omni drum overhead... it also sounds good on guitar several feet away and vocals, much better than an sm-57 (when you don't need that isolation for non live recordings). we use it as an overhead over the hi hat and snare and it keeps the hi hat at bay. i like the cymbols a bit dark and out of your face though.
