Just wondering about the importance of various drum mics. I'm thinking that, in order of importance, you could rank them like so:

OHs
Kick
Snare (Top)
Toms?
Snare (Bottom)?
Hi Hat?

Is this about right? Also, has anyone tried a SDC on the underside of a snare? And is a SDC preferable when micing a hi hat?

That looks about right to me.

I never mic my hats for recording, but in live applications, it's usually an SDC on the hats.

Yeah that looks pretty good. I've mic'ed my friends kit a couple of times, and I'm not a big fan of mic'ing the bottom of the snare. I can usually get that sound out of the overheads. Oh, and some people mic their cymbals. I would say that's the least important.

i like the sound of adding bottom snare for snap but other than that the list looks about right.

i like to try getting a good sound from OH and kick,,,then subtly adding what's needed from close mics, if i have to.

how do you guys eq your OHS if at all?

i usually lose the bass out of habit, but the last drum recording i did had a buzzy tom on the close mic.

ended up mixing a lot of bass/low mids from OHS in..which in turn led to using less and less of the snare and tom mics..

i thought this was going to be a make do fix, but i really like the final sound!!!

Why is the snare panned weird? Otherwise it sounds good.
