as everyone who's paying attention to my horribly newbie threads knows, i'm looking for cheap passable gear... I need a preamp setup that will be alright for a drum room. We usually run around six mics on the drums (because we don't have like, four GOOD ones lol), and we get a decent sound (actually quite nice), but having pres for those would be REALLY nice...

I was looking at that new Nady eight-channel pre for $180, but I don't know if it's garbage, or if there was something in the same price range that is better. Any ideas?

Are you using a console? The console's pre's probably sound as good as (if not better) than the Nady's. If you don't have a console, a cheap used Mackie from ebay would cost about the same, sound better, and you could even use it on gigs, or as a submixer or even a monitor board. Personally, I would save for some mid-level pre's like Presonus.

yeah, we have an old TAC Scorpion console... it's OLD though... that's why i'm not sure on the state of the pres... i think that some good pres would REALLY improve the sound.

i've mixed stuff that was tracked through that tac model. i think the pres are good and probably better than. you might need to have a knowledgeable tech look it over. otherwise, get ready to spend about $500 per channel to arguably get an improvement from a different board or outboard mic pres.

well... damn... i wonder why we're not getting better sound then... maybe it's the otari. *sigh* for some odd reason, everything coming out of there just sounds... i dunno...

go to http://www.nowhereradio.com/dreamcomefalse and listen... we tracked it in this studio with the TAC and the mx5050, and i mastered it in Ozone. is this the kind of sound we'd be expecting out of this gear?

maybe it's the isotope. what kind of converters are you using to get it into the computer?

It's not Ozone... if you go to http://www.mp3.com/toefinger5 you see samples straight out of the studio without any mastering done to it.

as far as getting it to the comp, we mix down from the Otari 8-track reel to a Panasonic DAT, where we get the two-track master, and then burn that to CD using a TEAC cd burner.

There is not much difference from the 8track copy to the finalized CD copy.
