Hey All,

Newbie here, and I know this topic has been beat to death, so I'll give you the specific scenario and maybe you guys can let me know what you think?

I have a drum set with 5 toms total (including floor) and about 8 cymbals. For some time I have been looking to buy a mic kit for the drums that I can use with DP6. I have used the Shure PGDMK6-XLR bundle for recording drums before, and was a little dissappointed with the sound I got from the overheads and bass kick. I have an Audix i5 that I'm happy with so I figured I would take a look at those mics, especially since the D6 is supposedly a beast! I'm looking at this page on sweetwater as it seems to have the best selection: http://www.sweetwater.com/c982--Drum_Mic_Bundles

So the mic bundle I was looking at was the Audix DP5-A bundle. The problem is these dont come with condensors for OH, which is something I feel that I need with so many cymbals. I was thinking of purchasing this set, and using the i5 in the bundle along with the lone i5 I have already as overheads, and buying an SM57 seperately for the snare, as I hear its pretty much the best around for such purposes. Has anyone used i5s as overheads before? Will this give me as good a sound as if I sucked it up and spent the extra money on the Audix DP-7 bundle? It was a little more than I wanted to spend.

Your insight would be much appreciated!

Ive never seen a complete drum mic package sold that was ever used in a pro studio...or had all the mics I like.
You are better off just buying the best sdc mics you can afford with a large capsule dynamic like an SM7b and some SM57s so you can kill 2 birds with one stone and have a better set of drum mics than you can ever buy in some companies package.

The SM7b is a brilliant vocal mic too...you will mic up all sorts of instruments with the nice SDC mics...and the SM57s come in handy for amplified things and vocals.
