Can someone explains to me, what the heck is that drum map crap, where is the utility??

...it will take alooong post to explain it, but lets make it short by click F1 key in SONAR... It will open the Help dialog. Click on the search tab, and do search by keyword Drum Map. Then jump to The Basic section... start from there... ALL is explained so well, simple and plain. Ask again if you have any difficulties...

Give the guy a break, not a reference to the stinkin' help file.

The drum map is not a utility, it's a different piano roll view tailored to editing percussion parts on midi channel 10. Where the normal piano roll view has the keyboaed down the left side, thr drum map shows the names and note-numbers of the selected drum map. You have lots of control over the parameters of each note, and you can use the drum map manager to select where you want your signal to go. For example, you might want to use a soundfont for your snare drum, and the Sound Canvas for the kick. Just select the appropriate output, and you can map your sounds where you want. To get to the drum map, insert a MIDI track, and click the little arrow in the output box. Select 'new drum map', and for now click on General MIDI, basic. When you're done with that, select the piano roll view and the drum map will open. Notice the drum names on the left side. You just input notes with the mouse or whatever you do to get midi data into your puter. From there, have fun with your bad self. If you have any more questions, ask. I use drum maps all the time, and the stuff I do and want to do with them isn't in the help file. I figured it out, and I'll help you if I can.

I use the Drum map to set the velocity levels (volume controls) for each drum and cymbal in my soundfont set. I save these and can retrieve them latter. This offers you more versatility in mixing your drums than just using the standard relative volumes preset in the font.

If the snare is not loud enough with respect to the hi hit I just change the levels and can build the sound for the song I am in. Prior to the Drum Map you had to use existing volumes which were not always accurate or useful.

You can also use it to build custom drum sets and percussion sets.

i love drum maps! i have a basic map for my v-drums then i just pick the assignment of each trigger. makes it real easy to audition different snare sounds etc. after you're done recording.
