I have an Alesis SR16 drum machine. I was wondering if it woulbd be better to record with midi or not. Any opinions?

Depends on what you want to accomplish with your drum machine, what kind of music you plan on recording, and how good the presets on unit sound.

When in doubt, experiment.

I'm recording R&B Hip Hop stuff. I doubt I could get the right sounds by using midi. But i may try it to see what it sounds like.

I don't understand what you mean by good sound from MIDI (MIDI IS NOT AUDIO)

If the Alesis unit has a MIDI in and a MIDI out you get the sounds of the alesis unit.

With midi you will have more control in your recording software (If you don't use software to record midi will not be any help to you except for syncing multiple MIDI devices).

are you recording onto a PC? if so...sell your wretched SR16 (I have one too) and buy a copy of fruityloops. (you can download the SR16 sounds online, or sample them yourself if you actually like those drums)

Drum machines suck. I think MIDI sucks also. I have both but mainly use my DR-670. Very time consuming. I tried programming my fruitty loop and I gave up. I have enough software to deal with. I want a real drummer that can play well(just fired one) and then I would invest in more mics.....

Well since I'm recording R&B and hip hop music the alesis sr16 should work fine on the pc. All I need to do is record to measure of beats and then copy the rest for the song. Then add any extra sounds I want in other tracks. I dont need a real drummer.
