Any recommendations?

I'm guessing they would normally use samples so, any suggestions on where to get good samples?

Sorry if this all sounds a little silly. I'm a little over-whelmed with all the terminology and diff sorts of equipment, etc..

Depends on how much you want to spend. Toontrack's EZdrummer is about 150 bucks and has a bunch of built in midi loops and you can make your own. It is supposed to be good, but I haven't used it. I use Sampletank with expansion drum kits from Sonic Reality. You can find free sample players and sampleswap.org has a bunch of free samples, it just takes some time to get it all set up. If you check out kvraudio.com's forum on samples, etc. there is a sticky at the top that tells you where to get sample players and samples.

I guess it depends on what kind of music you are looking to make. For trying to emulate a real drummer, the Toontrack/BFD/drumcore route cant be beat since they are set up like real drums and most have the midi patterns included.

For more dance/hip hop stuff there is sylus rmx, Linplug RMIV (what I like), Battery, and some others.

The Linplug and Battery are more like a MPC where you assign samples to "pads" and dont try to emulate anything. Think of them as more like stripped down samplers. I like the Linplug since it also offers a number of analog modeled synth style drums which are great in emulating 80's analog drum machines.

hydrogen works on linux windows and mac... and it's free.

Thanks for the advice. Given it's free and I'm already loving using it, thanks Tojo for suggesting hydrogen.. seems like it's perfect for me :D

And for those curious, I'm going to be making mostly "angry" music, ie; hard rock, metal, industrial, grunge. Although bits and pieces of other various genres will probably appear here and there.

Thanks again everyone

no problem. good luck with your drumming endeavours.

i suggest you look into getting some "kits" from the site... they're a bit tricky to install, but once you figure out it works well.
