hey everyone, my cousin and i set up his drum kit in my studio today just to test out the sound. the room is completely untreated for now, but we were just eager to record something hehe. here's the setup:

Kick: AKG D550
Snare: Shure SM57
OHs: Oktava MC012 (x2, chinese GC version)
Room: AKG C2000B

my cousin is the one playing in this clip, and of course it's not perfect since he was just screwing around and playing whatever. anyway, here's the clip:

i didn't apply any effects except the room mic was heavily compressed and used in the background. everything else is just as recorded, just with some minor volume adjustments to get decent levels. the kick sounds kinda "poppy" for lack of a better word, but i think we can get a better sound by trying a different mic placement. and the toms sound really dead because well all the skins on the kit right now are VERY old. we'll change em when it comes time to record some serious stuff. so what do you think? :o

What do I think???

I think that, considering an alligator can outswim a human being, and is actually 3 times as fast on land as a human being, that if you ever get into a triathlon against an alligator, you better build up a good lead in the cycling section...That's what I think.

But I can't listen right now...I'm looking forward to hearing this though. I'll check it out tomorrow morning. Good night. :)

Kick seems a little boomy..

Toms are WAY dead... give 'em some resonance

Everything is recorded really well, it is mainly just tuning/dampening things.. I would have to say this sounds really good for an unprocessed drum track..

that's exactly what I was thinking! :p

It's pretty good, actually. For some reason, it's almost totally panned to the right side, with just a bit coming out of the left. The overall sound is a pretty good starting point. Especially since you say you didn't EQ or anything, you can definitely make it come to life. The toms are a little dead, but that can actually work in your favor when it comes to mixing, eq'ing, adding reverb. I'd like to hear the same track after you've treated it.

i just noticed that too listening to it again haha. my ears were VERY tired by the time it came down to mixing this track since we had been playing drums in the room for a while before i pressed record. i'll do a little processing on the track today and see what i can come up with, then post an updated version. it's times like these i wish i had REAL monitors! i get so frustrated with the crap ones i have now. but before i buy new monitors i still want to do the room treatment. anyway thanks for the listen RAMI. :)
