What do you guys like to do to get Great drum tracks... ie by programming... not a live drummer...

A reliable source is telling me ACID and Recycle is the way to go...What do you guys suggest?

I am looking for hip and contemporary grooves..

I have a nuendo system for PC with a Aardvark Q10 soundcard..

thanks

FruityLoops is a good drum programming program.

This book's good for actual grooves/patterns:

Electronica Dance Music Programming Secrets by Roger Brown, Martin Griese

it's expensive though.

Update: just read that you do the same style of music as Buck62, so neither of the above will be of interest. I'll leave the post anyway, just in case.

Why is that?

Why would Fruity Loops not be appropriate for me?

I think Fruity Loops would work for you, but why don't you go download the demo and find out for yourself?...and if you do, be sure to click around or skim through the manual - there's lots of features tucked away all over the place.

downloading

I dont have DSL and have had a hard time downloading... i think for this reason...

i dont have Acid or Fruity loops yet and I may have to just buy them... but it would be nice if someone could graciously inform me about the pros and cons of each..

I am ordering DSL too thats next on the list..

Thank you!

FruityLoops seems aimed more at dance music. I've heard several of Buck62's songs and they're not in that style. You can use FruityLoops for many styles of music but the concensus seems to be you need to download some samples to add to the ones which come with Fruity. Sonusman contributed some tracks to the Mixing Clinic recently with drums done in FruityLoops. Quite a few people said things like great track, drums need some work.

FruityLoops is a great program but ideally, as has been said, you need to get hold of the demo first and check that it's right for you.

If you can get your hands on it. A program called Reason is amazing. I wish there were more threads about it. The drum machine on it is called REDRUM. Look into it.

I'm hooked on ACID!

Not literally, but ACID 3.0 works great for me. Never used Fruity. Acid Rocks, but it is all in the ACID files that you purchase to go with it. Shitty Loops=Shitty Tacks. If you want Techno, you get some techno loops. Rock, all genres available.

Thanks Fangar:

What system do you use? Mac or PC? Protools? Cubase?

Would you mind dropping a quick line how acid works? How do you do your grooves there?

Is it just a cut & Paste? Can you piece together several different loops in a song?

Thank you!

i record my own most of the time, or use samplers/keyboards. i dont like using soft synth programs for some reason.

i use cubase to program everything, and then transfer to nuendo or protools and do all the rest.

Also... As a nuendo user, would you recommend it over Cubase? I have heard that Midi can be diffiult on Nuendo and some people have recommended Cubase more so for midi. Have you had problems with Nuendo and midi?

as long as the groove is keyboard orientated, if it is complex, i program in Cubase, and then i can just send that straight to nuendo. if it's not complicated, ill program it all in Nuendo (cubase is a little better for midi).

however, if im recording audio, ill use audio recorders probably. i might edit it all in pro tools or something.

depends on the project.

Charlie,

I am using a PC (Windows ME) platform, and as far as I know it is not available on a MAC platform. I also use Sonic Foundry Vegas for mixing and effects. I record via Alesis ADAT and then dump down to PC. Anyway the use of ACIC is really pretty simple to get the hang of. As you become more advanced, you will learn to do more.

You will start with a blank canvase, very similar to one like you would have with Vegas Audio, Cakewalk, etc. Click here for a screenshot. Then you can use Loops, or single shots to create you drum tracks. There are hundreds of loop CD available for purchase meeting just about all genres. Click here for some loop libraries. Anyway these loops are dragged dropped, cut pasted etc wherever you want them. A loop canbe anything from an entire drum beat, to just a fill etc. I use a mixture of loops and one shots. Each sample cd contains a lot of one shots (Individual Dum Hits). I use mostly one shots as it gives me more versitility. The samples are mostly in Wav format, but you can find Oggvorbis, Aiff, and several others as well. Once you have created your drum tracks, you render it down to a stereo wav file that can be imported into Cubase, Vegas or whatever Tracker you are using. Very nice and great sounds. Obvioulsy, you are mostly limited by the quality of Samples that you have. Attached is a link to a sample for a song that I have done with Acid as the Drum tracks. (Just the drum track is posted). I have posted this before, but you may get a fell for the program. The hi-hats are a loop, but the drum hits were done shot by shot. Keep in mined also that there has been no FX added.

Hope that helps, please feel free to question futher if needed.

fangar what do you mean by one shots?

Tmay,

One shots are what Sonic Foundry calls single hits. For example a Snare Hit, or Cymbal hit. Just another name for a single strike of a percussion piece, or chord that can be moved around. As opposed to a loop which contains usually a series of One shots that are all together in one wav file. By using one shots, ACID is much like a Drum machine as far as the way Samples are moved around and placed. It is just easier to see what you are working with because of the layout.
