Drum clips or stands?

Hey,

just wondering what people used for snare (and toms i guess) mics. I was thinking of getting the drum mic holders that clasp onto the shell. Do they have any problems (vibrations doing weird things etc) or are they generally pretty similar to having the mic on a stand?

Stands...always. Yes, vibration is a huge problem when recording. Clips are for live use.
 
i used drum clips (on the toms) for my drum recording which was my first and i think the toms sounded very good. look in 'Percussion and Drums' and the thread titled 'MY drum mix, NOTmsblaze' and there is a link to the recording so you can listen to it and see.
 
I use the the clips that came with my 604's...I play Tama Starclassic Perfomers. What I do is put the clip on the starcast mount....no problems with vibrations having it mounted there.
 
I have Tama Starclassic and have used mounts on the Starcast mounts too and I find a lot of lowend rumble comes through. Every time the kick hits you can hear the rumble in all mics mounted to a star cast hoop. I would recommend stands personally as all that rumble turns to mud in a mix and you have to gate everything in between hits to keep the rumble under control. I would probably gate anyway, but this makes it even more critical.

That's my thoughts too.
 
I recorded with clips. was not to bad..... but it was easer recording with stands.

Clips for live from now on stands for recording or critical percussion micing :D
 
A buddy of mine back in the day used clips, he glued the biggest, bulkiest soft foam pads he could find to the insides of the clips, and his recordings were pretty clean. He switched to stands shortly after busting 2 mics on a roll in which he hit every damn mic on the set, not a single drum.


Alcohol + Drums + Mic Clips = Everyone in the building rofl'n irl.

I've used clips on occasion for snares.....but only in a pinch. I'd prefer a nice stand any day.
 
I am using clips for toms and snare. Toms are Onstage clips and are plastic, so they don't distridute much noise and interferance. Using an LP claw on snare. Don't have much to worry about and am getting a great sound. Soon I will be using LDCs for toms, so I will switch to stands for better and easier placement.

What I am finding is that the actual mic cables touching sources that they should not adds low end rumble that needs to be isolated. Keep your mic cables from touching anything they shouldn't. I had one cable touching the base of a cybmal stand, so every time that cymbal is hit I got a low rumble.
 
I prefer stands by far. Shockmounts are also very useful, and can make a world of difference if you have songs that the drums are very Tom-based. Otherwise, if you are tight in money, don't bother with Shockmounts for the time being.
 
I used those with my friend. i bought the smason Q-Tom mics, we thought the clip might propose a problem, but the dont, so no worries. Besides why pay 40 bucks for one stand when you can buy like 20 clips for the same price.
