I'm a guitar player and i want to be able to put together some drum beats for my songs. I have "drums on demand" and other loops to build some rhythm tracks for songs but that's kinda time consuming and not very adjustable so to speak. I have tried out fruity loops but just get frustrated. I have a cheap midi keyboard and electronic drum machine that i'm sure i could use for midi applications. I am running cakewalk sonar 6 for most of my recording and I have a Delta 1010 sound card. I've always had a hard time with midi and my Delta card. it could be my lack of understanding on the subject or configuration issues. Am I better off to buy a seperate MIDI interface box? Is there any software that is relatively easy to use for what i want to do. Fruity loops seems to be geared toward the dj end of things. I know someone on here is doing the same thing I'd like to do, but I'm having a hard time sifting through the vast amount of information out there regard drum loops and beat making.

Jamstix2 from rayzoon.com springs to mind. It does a pretty pretty good job of generating beats that don't sound unduly stiff and robotic.

Fruity loops is a pretty good drum programming environment in and of itself. But if you want drums that sound like a competent drummer is playing them... Jamstix is pretty nifty.

+1 for EZDrummer. I've had the same frustrations as you for years. EZDrummer solved almost all of my drum programming problems, and it integrates with Sonar wickedly.

You can create pretty realistic drumparts using Fruity Loops.
It just takes some decent samples and a lot of tweaking and time and basic understanding of drums.

Check this cover of Would by Alice in Chains. I made the drums entirely with Fruity Loops.

Another for ezdrummer. Sounds great right out of the box, just drag and drop where you want it.

Cheers,

i recommend Acoustica Beatcraft.

It's easier to use and more flexible than fruity loops.i'd post a link but the board won't let me until i've posted 5 times...

you can try it free for 30 days and it's only $30 if you decide to buy it.

i imported some samples to use...check out some of my stuff here...

I recommend DIY artificial drums. Sample real drums and cut and paste them together yourself.

Of course this is because I'm apparently a huge masochist and probably not very smart to boot.

cool guys, thanks for the tip with EZDrummer! got a similar problem than hubb_99 and fortunately found this thread :p
