Hey, im going to be buying some mics soon for drums and a vocal mic. I've never really recorded drums before but i want to start with a four drum mic setup and then go from there as i learn. I have an sm57, which i guess i could use for snare. Then i was thinking about getting a akg d112 for the kick drum and for overheads, a pair of Rode NT5. What do you guys think about that setup and in your opinion what would be better.

For vocal mic i really am not sure what i want. I haven't tried much mics out and if i did, im not sure if i would be able to tell a difference because im new to recording. I wanna get a good mic though and i am willing to spend around 1000 for now. I just would like suggestions for an all around good mic that can record differentkinds of voices well etc...
thanks alot for any replies and suggestions

Personaly I would also look at the MXL 603's for overheads (price) and as far as the vocals go you might think about getting 3 mics for around a total of $1000. mix it up a little so that you have some variety. no one mic is going to work for everyone. maybe get some of the more recomended mics like the SP C1 then maybe a MXL v67 and perhaps a AT-4033 or AT-4040. as I said I would rather have more choices on the shelf than one good vocal mic that may or may not work on a given person. There are lot's of choices out there. I could name you 50 mics I'd like to have but it will be a while before I buy a even a $600.00 mic. I need more selection..... Also what are you using for preamps?

The d112 seems to be the kick mic of choice hands down. I my self have a beta52 and from what I understand it takes more work to get a good sound out of it. Wish I had a d112:) Then again I am always dealing with crapy drums:mad:

Good luck

PS The way you wrote this looked to me like the $1000 was just for a vocal mic??

yeah the 1000 for the vocal mic is separate from the drum mics. im willing to spend up to a thousand on the vocal mic and however much else it takes for good drum mics

Well I would get a decent preamp if you don't have one. There is no silver bullit of microphones, and I would not drop the whole grand on one mic if it was me. Maybe some one could geve you a list of 3 mics that you could get for the grand that would leave you in a well rounded position.

the options are endless. With the price of mic's these days you can get a varity of good mics for 1000. If i was going to drop 1000 on just one mic I guess I would try the TLM-103 and a FMR-RNP preamp or the studio projects VTB preamp.

not knowing if you have a dedicated vocal preamp or not makes it hard to say where you should put your money as the pre can make a huge difference in how well the mic sounds.

Maybe you should give us a run down of what you already have, and what you intent to do with your equipment. It would make things much easier.

I wouldn't spend that much. It's not necessary. Plus, you'll have money left for mic pres – where it can make a big difference.

OH's – MXL 603S
Snare – 57
Kick – Audio Technica ATM 25

Vox – C3 Humbucker Jake aaso swears this mic is great on kick.

Well im pretty new to recording but im planning on getting a Yamaha aw4416 and for now i was planning on using the mic pres on that because of my budget. im thinking about getting the 8 i/o expansion card and then getting the alesis 12r for pres for the card. im going to use that to record and then maybe use my computer to do any further editting. im getting all my stuff with in a few weeks and im just still a little undecided of what mics i want.

If it was me and I had the 57 already I would start out with a pair of MXL 603's for overheads and instrument mics. I would get a D112 for the kick, use the 57 on the snare if you need to have a seperate snare mic and I would try to score a AT-4033 at a good price. If you plan to record drums and guitar at the same time I would get another SM-57 as well. they do great on electric guitar and you don't need that great of a room to get good results.
I would also get one good mic pre with compression or a seperate compressor.

(not all of these mics are tested by me but they have tested by countless people here and with great success)

If you want to go a little cheaper on the mic you could substatute the Studio Projects C1 for the AT-4033. Both are highly spoken of.
I have a AT-3035 wich is a cheaper mic than the 4033 and I really like it.

I am assuming the expanssion card and the alesis are a ways down the road? I would hold off. it says you can record 16 tracks at a time as long as you are not playing back anything. and then you can record up to 8 while playing back 16 tracks. That is pretty good. If you want to record many tracks at once do it right off the bat and you should be set. I would really do some homework before I invested in the expanssion card, and I would deffenetly ask around before buying the Alesis (not a big fan of the company) I would rather have one or two killer preamps for vocals than that unit myself and it looks to me like you are not going to greatly expand your capability. to be unless you can record more tracks with the expansion board you don't need the Alesis?? Just be carefull!!

Good luck

With your setup, with $1000, I would buy a pre and a vocal mic for a dedicated vocal channel. The pre will have many applications
for recording lots of stuff. Say, Studio Projects VTB-1, $180. The difference between a $1000 and an $800 mic is negligible, but the difference a pre will make is not. Then you're faced with the choice of whether to buy 1 middle level mic, or more than 1 good bargains. If it's got to be 1 mic in the $800 range, likely suspects would be Neumann TLM-103, B.L.U.E. Dragonfly, Studio Projects T3, Audio-Technica AT4050/CM5. I think I would buy 2, a higher end dynamic such as Shure SM7, and a FET condenser such as Studio Projects C3, or a tube mic like Rode NTK. For one lovely all around condenser, my choice would be the Dragonfly.-Richie
