Looking at a diagram of a mixerless system, I just realized that I don't know what drives/amplifies the monitor/speakers.

Your audio interface will have either RCA out or 1/4" jack out which then goes into your monitors.

What exactly do you mean by a mixerless system? What diagram are you looking at?

He means a mixerless studio (I think) as in where you use an interface and just plug stuff into that.

One way or another there has to be a power amplifier. It can be built into the speaker (probably what the diagram assumes) or a separate piece of hardware. An interface will have at least one stereo output to send signal to the amp or amplified studio monitors.

Presumably the speakers are powered, as bouldersoundguy has said - depends what type of system you're talking about - mixers aren't necessarily the source of amplificaton power to drive passive speakers.
Mixers can either have amplifiers built in (not normally used in recording), or not. Speakers can either have amplifiers built in or not.

No, you don't need balanced leads to run 3 feet from your interface/mixer to your monitors...

One interesting exception to the above is the Carvin studio mate. It is a mixer designed for home studio use which has a specific power amp section for driving passive monitors.-Richie
